Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cleaning bar tape?

My Bianchi has celeste bar tape and I was wondering what you all do to clean "lighter" colored bar tapes? Do you, or do you just replace it when it gets too nasty looking?

I replace mine every 6 months. If you want to just clean it, try Simple Green.

I replaced my Bianchi celeste bar tape with black tape because of the same difficulty.

Changing it out because it's dirty is a complete waste. You can clean that stuff (as long as it isn't triflow lube tar) with rubbing alcohol and a rag. Comes out very nicely.

You won't get it as brand spanking new looking as a fresh roll but it's clean.

Keep baby-wipes in the garage, shop, bedroom, closet or where ever you work on your bike. They work great for overall quick after ride wipe downs and do a good job of removing dirt from bartape.
For white bar tape, use a toothbrush (not your roommates or spouse) and some whitening toothpaste. It'll brighten that white tape up.

I've been cleaning white Deda tape with a toothbrush, scouring pad/sponge and dish soap for two seasons. Gets it looking fresh again in a few minutes. Bought some Fizik white tape today because it's non-porous and supposedly stain resistant. We'll see in a few weeks how that claim holds up.
