Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I am probably the Fred amongst the people that I ride with:

- I always wear soccer shorts on top of my tight biking shorts.
that's a pretty good indication.

I think there's some confusion and overlap in the definitions here. Freds for me have always been about sketchy and dangerous riding ability. The other stuff relating to fashion and gear is simply OCP. I don't mind OCP and attitudes at all, but it's the fred's riding and crash-potential that scares me. Been there, done that too many times. I think that's partly why so many more-experienced riders have no patience with freds.

Wow, you guys are dicks.

How about maybe holding a clinic where everyone can work on their skills instead of turning up your noses at people who know less than you?

And I don't know if anyone else noticed, but it is ****ing impossible to look cool on a bicycle. Get over yourselves, we ALL look dorky. STFU and ride your bike.

OK, botto, I won't hold back.

You're my favorite fred.

(botto knows I'm kidding--but now for the others....)

But really, I just want to get this straight--if you call someone a fred it makes you a dick. But if you call a dedicated, proficient (at least more proficient than YOU) club racer or a guy with money to burn on his bike a "Lance wanna-be," we're all supposed to just grin and say "wow, you sure got me there?"

What is it that's so disconcerting? The fact that there are cyclists out there who are better than you and look less ridiculous while riding, or the fact that they have a nickname for you?

It's been my experience that those who rail on about Freds and being in the OCP club the most......usually ARE the Freds.

Methinks thou dost protest too much.

Hold a clinic? Most freds I know don't want to be taught, they find it insulting that someone would insinuate they were not sophisticated enough to understand how to ride. That's half the issue.

I'll gladly teach someone all that I know if they express an interest.

Ah, but Freds are the soul of cycling. Essentially. There are 8 million cyclists who ride 2+ times weekly. There are about 50,000 licensed amateur racers. Do the math.

7.95 million cycling enthusiasts who might qualify as 'Freds'. Or sub-Freds. Whatever.

So give them a little respect you Road Nazis. Because if the Freds of the World Unite they have us out-numbered 160 to 1. But don't worry, they'll never catch us : ).

Of course. Some of you weenies are taking this Fred debate FAR to seriously.

They're BICYCLES. This is not world peace, civil rights or global warming. More important than any of that crap, but still.

I gotta wonder how all the people named Fred feel about being Freds.

Do they introduce themseves to other cyclists,"HI Im Fred"

There's a guy in my club named Fred who isn't one. But yes, he introduces himself as Fred.

Hey Doc,
Thats confusing.
He is one, but he isnt one, and he introduces himself as one.
If he was one what would you call him?

I love the guys riding with knee-high gym socks and sandals trying to hang on my wheel at 23 Mph. I always pick it up to about 30 Mph and wave bye bye over my shoulder.
