Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

A year in review... sorta, but a little more

Ok, so first I'll disclaim. I swear I set the cranks straight up and down the seat tube, but a gremlin musta knocked it during the pictures! (I don't have a garage, so the white garage door was just out of the question)

Anyway, The first picture is the bike when bought in summer of 2005. My first road bike.

Next picture is the bike as it looked today after a cleaning.

Upgrades/changes made in the last year:

Mavic Open Pro rims. The ALX rims stock were softer than cotton and were being trued constantly. I was running the ALX rims for races only

Ultegra Double/10spd. The FSA triple/9spd was nice for entry, but once I got some strength built up, I just never used the granny. The FSA crankset was CONSTANTLY coming loose. When I finally got the thing replaced, the LBS said I was pretty lucky it didn't just fall off on the previous ride.

Specialized Toupe 143. I spent some time on an Arione, but it was simply too narrow and I got sick of not being able to feel the important parts. I like the Toupe, but it has to be in just the right position or you know there's no padding on it.

Powertap. I put this on last month and am most stoked about this. Built it into a 32spoke Open Pro rim and will likely only ride that wheel for the forseeable future.

2005 mileage clocked in around 3,000 km in the second six months of the year.
2006 mileage to date: 12,246 km.

It's not an OCP bike, but it gets the job done. I've got the nod from the wife to move to a more aggressive geometry frame when we move back to the DC area in Feb '08.
