Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

line the label of the tire up with the valve of your innertube - that way you can find the valve quickly.

If you don't regularly eat the kinds of food that you'll be chowing during the ride, you're gonna be sorry.

Case in point: Never tried Apple Cinnamon Powerbars. Had one at mile 30 of a century...needed a fricken cork for the rest of the ride.

Toss a chapstick in your saddle bag. Great for (all kinds) of chapped 'parts'.

When stopping at a convenience store for hot coffee during a cold weather ride:

Remove your ski mask BEFORE going inside.

1 patch kit with lots of patches is good.
1 tube because some flats just can't be patched
2 tubes because whatever your front hit, your back probably hit too.
1 pump, or lots of CO2, or both
2 water bottles, and they don't need to be in carbon cages
1 presta schraeder adaptor for gas stations
If you're paranoid/ride way out in the middle of nowhere without a cell phone then a tire boot helps.
Check your tire pressure befor eevery ride (pressing with your thumb is usually fine if you can do that).

This is kind of related but non-cycling tip - I scanned my passport and drivers license, saved them as pdf files and emailed them to my gmail account. If I ever lose one of them, I can print copies as long as i can get internet access.

When climbing, try to relax your upper body as much as possible, and smile....which may not be easy, but it will aid in relaxing your body, therefore using less energy and making yourself more efficient.

Carry 9-12 tablets of Ibuprofen and several Tums in a zip lock bag inside your "manly" saddlebag. At the first sign of knee pain take 600mg of Ibuprofen (3 tabs) with something to eat. Not only will the pain subside but the anti-inflammatory effect will reduce swelling of the joint as well.
The Tums help in warding off muscle cramps. I can't cite any medical journals as references but I think it's the calcium. I have helped many friends with this simple kit. (Gatorade and bananas have plenty of potasium but no Calcium.)
Also carry a spoke wrench in same saddle bag and tape extra spoke inside your seat post (and tool to remove said seat post)
A dollar bill work well as a boot for a cut tire.

Good advise on the guy who said carry a card with your blood type on it. Someone told me that a couple years back and i did it. Never though much of it, but in March i got hit by a car and broke both my legs. My right femur pierced my phemanal (sp?) artery and i lost 4 liters of blood. Nearly died on my way to the ER, but that card saved valuable minutes, by not having to get my blood tests back then giving me blood. Just my 2 cents.

Oh yeah, tips: don't listen to roadie tips and tricks. Half of the ones that are even comprehensible are wrong anyway.

Powerbar wrapper is an excellent tire boot. Also, "glueless" patches while not terribly good for long-term tube patching are decent mini-boots for a semi-permanent tire repair.

Ouch, that doesn't leave you with much left! Glad you made it.

My tip:

Turn your bottles upside down when it's near or below freezing, then you can still drink from them as they freeze solid.

grab your water bottles out of the cages upside down so they're easier to drink and stick back in the cages

Be carefuly with Gmail. I saw in the news that when you sign up, you also agree for them to occasionally look through your mail.

Shift to your smallest cog before changing a rear flat.
Dollar bills make great tire boots in a pinch.
