I've had some sort of head cold the last 5 days or so. Kicking my butt indeed. I tried to get out for a ride yesterday, but between still trying to recover and hte 20+mph head winds, I only made it out about 8mi before turning it around and limping home with the tail wind.

Glad to see I am not the only one out of commision. I spent all of yesterday on the couch, only getting up to fix myself something to eat.

But hey, at least I read about 60 pages of "LA Confidential" and about 40 pages of another book.

Man - I got it bad also, wednesday I got a flu shot and thursday it started. Worked outide yesterday and was amaze at the amount of fatigue, but did 54 minutes on a trainer. It was nice, ~ mid 50's, but I feared with the wind I wouldn't make it back home. I tried ZiCam - No help, went back to suda fed, extreme cold strrength.

Gonna try the trainer again today. (avoiding the gym so no others catch it)

Me too. I was off the bike for a good week. Interesting thing was my Polar picked up on it before I did. I was using the OwnOptimizer test on my S725X and one day, even after a recovery day, I got a "hard training effect" result. The next day I got "overreaching," and the day after I was sick and miserable.

What is it using as a metric to make these assessments? Change in resting HR or something like that?
I know for me that if I see my resting HR go up more than 10 bpm for no apparently reason (ie from hard trianing), then I know that I need to cur back right away because something is up. The times I've pushed through it usually led to getting sick. So I think at those times my body was fighting something but I didn't know it yet.

+1.

102+ fever, all-over bodyaches, the shakes, and hurling from both ends. Could keep nothing down for almost 2 days. All I could think about.....getting back on the bike.

As I understand it, it uses resting and standing HR and the difference between the two (an orthostatic test) to make some statement about training effect, etc. based on a series of baseline measurements during a base period. Pretty cool, but it sounds like your budget version works just fine.

I had pneumonia for a week or so when the weather here got really nice. Took care of myself, though, and now that the weather's nice again I am healthy enough to ride!

The past 2 days here in philly were great "winter" riding weather... mid-high 50's... I've been sitting at home trembling with a stomach flu... ugh... I felt better today and got out for 30 miles, but still feel a little weak and out of it... hopefully it's passing... bring on the theraflu

oh man, you guys are making me paranoid...

not that my cycling abilities are anything to brag about, but I've been putting in a lot of miles so far this winter and I'd hate to have a bad case of the flu set me back to square one. Maybe I should have gotten a flu shot...

Buy oscillococcinum. It is a homeopathic flu remedy. It works really well. Especially if you can take it at the first sign of flu. Also, if you feel like you might get sick take Airborne or its generic counterparts.

I had a thought...

do you think we're at a higher risk of cold or flu because we're often worn down from training or do you think we're at a lower risk of a cold or flu because we're in better shape than the average person?

too many variables to make any sort of proper conclusion... people work/live in different environments/atmosphere's, stress levels, medications, etc... riding may keep you fit and healthly, but there's just too many other things that weigh in on overall health and how each individual's body will react to exposure of things like the flu.

Dude! Get out and ride. Wimp.
Just kidding. The flu kicks my rear every time I get it. The stomach flu is lovely as well. I suppose my 3 year old will bring home something fun from preschool soon. Yay! Then April will come around and my allergies will beat the leaving hell out of me.

Flu bug hasn't reached us yet. Hopefully it won't reach me at all. My job requires my voice and sometimes the flu deprives me of it. Fingers crossed...

there was this stomach virus going around a few weeks ago, and I had it...horrible, but only lasted about a day or two.

However, i got my flu shot and while everyone is is dropping like flies, i feel great! Of course, it doesn't protect against all viruses or colds. I didn't get a cold all last year, but i am sure the bomb will drop on me some time this winter.

Had the flu.

Turned into a sinus infection.

I'm still fighting it and it's been over two weeks now.

I always heard work-outs when you have a virus are bad because you are more at risk for cardiac myopathy. Don't know if it's true, but that's why I don't.

Dayquil, Gatorade, warm hat. Man up, Nancy.

And if things get rough in the lungs, a tab of DXM.
