I think it's mainly a 'ride on weekends, afraid of cars' vs a 'aware that cars, generally, exist' thing.
Crap, ride in a straight line, be responsible for being aware of what's around you, call out things that are exceptional, and if you're in front, don't lead the group over the dead squirrel.
Seems like a lot of the problem is people thinking they have to ride in the gutter instead of in the lane.

I am simply more aware of my surroundings on that road than a mirrorless rider could be. That is really not debatable. Making me more aware gives me more options and keeps me safer. I like that.

I learned on my first group ride that you can make no assumptions about anybody based on what they are wearing, what they look like, or what they are riding. Oh, you can say this one is OCP, that one's a Fred but that says nothing about their riding skills, only their fashion skills.

I am one of those dudes who show up to group rides on my training bike wearing camo cutoffs and tennis shoes, and then destroy the A level ride. They look at me and see a 16 year old kid, but they have no idea that I am a cat 3 going on cat 2.

Why would you go on a training ride in camo cutoffs (army pants?), do you change your pedals to a flat bmx style for the shoes? If you rode along with most groups, chances are they would let you ride away from them.

When I get bothered by car back type stuff I just ride away from the person doing the calling. And I normally only get bothered if we are on a Class Two bikelane when they are doing it.

I know I'm potentially putting my life in danger, but it's a fun way to pass the time.

When I see posts like this I often check the profile of the OP. I see that DM4's hobbies are "High-end audio and wet, naked women." Now I'm not going to fault any guy for liking wet naked women, but DM4 I'm afraid your credibility with me is nil. Try to help other riders who may not be as strong or road-smart as you. Don't just cut them down. Did one guy REALLY have a helmet mirror?! Did you call the police?

I have been riding with the same few groups for over 10 years. I have been living in the same area that long now. Been a member of the closest cycling club that long too.
But riding with other groups for over 25 years.
After a while most riders get to know each other, so if a teenager in street clothes and sneakers shows up and tries to "destroy" all the group, I'm pretty sure it would be mostly ignored. It wouldn't anger me in the slightest.
I have seen some younger guys in cutt of pants and t-shirts come to the track and to crits in the past and not last very long in races. It's only happened 2 or 3 times. I do live in a large (not by USA standards) city of around a few million and the larger group rides and club/open races have many pro tour and continental team riders in them depending on the time of year. A teenager in sneakers would go more or less ignored.

My preference is for minimal calling. Generally the guys that do most of the calling don't last on our group ride; they get dropped early. Yes, there are cars approaching from behind. There are always cars approaching from behind. Do we want you calling every five seconds? I find it irritating in the extreme. But I suppose some like it, so I generally tolerate it.
