Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Watch out when ordering from performance

Hello
I received my order from performance bike and The 24 pack of GU gel had expiring date of feb/07 (2 weeks to eat them all ?) so I called performance I thought they will send me a new pack for no problem but no, they want me to send them back this pack at my expense , I said , hey this will cost me at least 10$ for an item thats worth 25$ ? so they say no its ok we will credit your c.card with your shipping fees. oviously thats to much trouble and Im not going to do it .. and I will use these anyway I think they will still be good after 2/3 months .BTW all other things from this order were to my satisfaction.
just wanted to let you know.

That's a bummer.

But don't worry too much about that expiration date. If its good on Feb28 its not going to be bad March1st. I've eaten things that were months past their expiration date and lived to tell the tale.

(I'd get it for free, since I was a stock boy and it would have been thrown out otherwise)

I have ingested GU gels that were 3 months old. Maltodextrin won't go bad as quickly unless you open the pack and subject it to air. If you buy maltodextrin syrup in an Asian grocery store, it has no expiration date. You'll be okay with it. I wouldn't ding Performance for this.

Should probably be good for about a year pass expiration date. After which taste may be affect but would probably be safe for consumption. It's like that for a lot of processed sterile sealed foods. Mayonnaise can last indefinitely as long as it's unopened.

Clearance sale food = BAD IDEA.

I ordered one of the big tubs of Endurox from REI Outlet, and it expired 3 days after I got it.

Why should they send you more for free? How do they know you didn't eat it? They don't. What you experienced was one of the known risks you assume when dealing on the internet. They said they'd even cover the shipping! Your post should've said "Performance is great! They screwed up, but it's not going to cost more than few minutes of my time to make it right".

That said....keep it and use it. It probably won't kill you.

Sorry I ment one of the down sides of performance is like all virtual shops that you recieve the things that you bought in the mail, days after you "paid" for them and only THEN you can see what you get.
regarding the expiration date, well the question is not wether the gels will make me sick if I consume them 3 months from now cause Im sure it will be fine but the thing is is that this produnt onlike mayonaise is a hi-tec performance formulas (it better be for 1$/oz :-) and how it will perform ...

Especially, if it's a Pinerrelo, but Giants are immune.

When food items are on sale (with a very large discount) it is because they will expire soon. This happens at supermarkets or anyplace that sells food. They just want to make some money on it so they price it cheap to get it to move. Just because it is past expiration really means nothing (unless its dairy, which you can obviously tell when it goes bad).

I wouldnt worry. I have eaten many things months over their expiration.

I also bought SUGOI trisuit and I it came out perfect and the price was great to-o so I should have written "watch out when you buy nutrition products on sale from performance" sorry you are right

Heh! Little do you know that that tri suit has an expiration and the first time out of the water with it, you may find it all bunched around your ankles.

I got some gel from Performance that the maltodextrin had actually hardened in. It was like eating a mouthful of straw when I squeezed it out of the packet.

On Tuesday my wife bought two jars of peter pan peanut butter that our local publix had on sale (two for one).

Wednesday we found out it was recalled due to salmonilla and we get to ship it back on our dime.

I don't know this for sure, but due liability issues I bet most foods like this could be consumed six months after the expiration date . . . and as far as dealing with Performance, I've always had good experiences . . . I'd have to say more so from their walk-in store here in Richmond, Va. but even on-line I don't have any complaints.

I guess it's out of the question for performace to post the expiration date of the clearanced items so that the consumers know what they're getting?

As far as consuming any of the mentioned products after the printed expiration date, I'd assume from other's experience that this is probably all right to do. Nobody here has complained of any ill effects, and I've not seen any other posts on the subject. I do have a follow-up proposition for group consideration: Perhaps the expiration date is not the date the comanies expect the food to go bad, but some estimated date that they think they might lose some of their effectiveness? Or maybe more simply, they expect that the product won't be as fresh?

Gu is good for years after the expiration date. I once found an old one and emailed them. The taste goes but it's still fine. It was 3+ years old.

Thanks for the heads up, I was about to order some from the Performance clearance sale. I'll have to see if the LBS has any. No one every carries banana.

Gu is expensive! I ride with honey packets (free from restaurants) and a little plastic film-roll cansiter full of chocolate-covered espresso beans... sugar and caffeine... mmm...
