Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My wife thinks I am a girly man for shaving legs

OK, so am I? The spring season will soon be upon us, so I must decide ... do I shave my legs or not this year. For the past two seasons I shaved (didn't have the guts to do it before that) and quiet frankly, I LOVED IT! My wife, however, is a different story. She hates it, says I dont look like a "man," she hates the way it feels, blah, blah, blah!!!
No, I dont race! Just ride just about every day and don't want to pick gravel out of hairy road rash legs. (Two years of shaving, but only 1 year where I actually fell.) I know this topic has been discussed ad nauseam, so I hesitate to bring it up again. But....what the hey!!!
Should I tell her to "Stuff it" or succumb to her warped sense of manliness? (no wise cracks please! She's plenty satisifed )

I would say if you want to keep her happy maybe this is one of those things you should let slide. If it was something you had been doing since the beginning of the relationship then it might be okay but if she knew you when you were a sasquatch then that is how she likes you. But if you are really serious about it and want to keep the legs baby smooth, sit down and talk to her about it. Find out if there is a middle ground that can be reached. Never hurts to ask.

My wife got me drunk and made me shave. Serious. Been at it ever since. She digs it. And that's the only real reason I do it. Enough with the cycling excuses.

You can have a discussion about gender perception, body image, traditional definitions of masculinity and femininity and their contemporary application, and generally turn the whole feminist argument on its head to justify why men are OK to shave their legs while women can't be forced to do so.

Tell her that in a couple months when your legs are hard as cinder blocks, and you have an *ss so hard you can bounce a quater off it....she can feel your legs and butt. That usually makes them forget about the shaved legs!

OMG this sounds like the Dr. Phil or Oprah in the Afternoon forum.

I like this option better.

And NO! I am not Ryan and only half-kidding. She does hate them, but actually, I am just as concerned about being too much of a poseur (a title I usually relish) since I am not a racer.

My ex girlfriend didn't much care for my shaved legs either.

Not for that reason only, but I'm now involved with a woman who rides, and who thinks my shaved legs are hot.

it's not about the legs, it's about letting someone dictate what you should or should not do.
Now are you a cyclist or some whipped husband?

and for the record, shaved legs are H-O-T!

That's it. We need to start a "Spouses for trade" thread. I bet it would even get a sticky.

My wife doesn't mind, but my 10 year old daughter can't stop pointing and laughing. By the way I like the name (Old and In the Way). Great album.

I thought it was awesome the first time I did it. I used Elite Ozone Depil Mousse, which I thought was just overpriced Italian cycling Nair. Then I tried regular nair and had a seriously bad reaction. I felt like my leg was on fire and I couldn't rinse it off. Now I just shave because I can't afford to use the Elite stuff all the time.

But am I reading that right? The OCP president doesn't shave his legs?

If he shaves he's a girly man - if he doesn't he's a whipped husband. There's a win-win

Seriously he should just go with the wife on this. If he were to grow a pair and oppose her, he would have to shave them too.

Meh...I just use my gf's Venus razor. After cutting my legs up (always behind the knee) with my regular razor, and even trying an electric razor.....I finally decided to use the gf's razor one day. Man....what a difference. Granted, she hates it because her blades don't last for **** now

And yeah, I get constantly heckled about it.

It's not about crashing...it's a "tribal ritual" of passage into the ranks of "real cyclists".

+1. I sustained some quality road rash on my unshaven legs in the fall and managed just fine. Totally a tribal ritual. And it makes my legs look like they actually have some definition.

I've been shaving my legs for a while and not one complaint from the girlfriend, except when my legs are smoother than hers... is that wrong?

Try being twenty and living in a house with 7 other alcoholic college students in a redneck town...

Yeah, I get alot of crap for doing it but it doesn't really bother me. Having drunk kids laugh at ya because you ride a bike just makes you realize how pathetic they really are...Not to mention my ex loved it. My parents on the other hand...different story all together.
