Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I just took a look at the current ebay listings for new bikes from companies like cannondale and trek, both of which do NOT allow online reselling. There is one guy selling 20-30 brand new treks and cannondales right now. So, either someone stealing from a shop, or a shop unloading bikes on ebay even though they are not supposed to, I suppose.

The shop I used to work at had to fire it's manager because he was ordering parts from QBP and frames from Trek and selling them on ebay without ever putting anything in the shops books, all cash going into his pocket. So the fact that there are many others doing the same doesn't surprise me in the slightest.

Bike thieves, and shop theives, ought to get their hands cut off. Then maybe they should be thrown in a shark tank. Followed by a foray in a tiger cage.

I've always hated statements such as the one in the article. It seems more often than not people come up with some number that they have no way of proving, to prove to others that they are correct and think their way.

wow, lots of dick tracys or maybe barney millers in this thread, e-bay is significantly self-policing in that it is harder and harder (compared to the old days) to sell anything without a legitimate CC card or bank account. Personally I haven't intentionally purchased or sold anything on e-bay that wasn't a pay-pal transaction in several years and thats one of the reasons why I do it, the one thing I know for certain about the "master criminals" that chop bikes is that not many of them have a checking account

So I wonder Oilman15106, you think your kid was just jiving you?
Maybe YOU should contact eBay about the "stolen" bike.
Or I can, if you send me some details I can use. eBay has heeded my notices 100% of the time so far.

One thing I hate about ebay is when you are buying an item there is no telling what you are getting. For example, a wheelset will be for sale on there and its hooked up to a bike with a cassette, tire, etc... then the seller ends up only selling the wheel without the cassette. For crying out loud DO NOT put something in the picture unless IT IS the actual item being sold. If you are not selling the cassette on the wheel then take the damn thing off before you post up the picture on ebay. What do you guys think of this?

Simple. Read the description. If it doesn't make sense, ask the seller a question. If it still doesn't make sense, then don't be stupid by bidding. If you get screwed, then it's no one's fault other than your own. Not trying to be offensive - just stating pure fact.

I care as well! It's disturbing to me to think about buying bicycle parts without regard as to whether the parts are stolen or not. I will not bid on any item on eBay if I get even a whiff of something underhanded and I'll ask questions if I'm not sure.

I think the percentages are off, there's not that many stolen bikes for sale online...

That being said, anyone want to buy a slightly used Pinarello Dogma FPX? It's a 58 and I bought the wrong size by mistake... as I often do when dropping eight grand on a bike. It's yours for 800 bucks...

When Im Buying Parts I Couldnt Care Less Where They Are Coming From. I Didnt Steal Them. Im Just Buying, And I Refuse To Worry About Where They Come From. Im Just Trying To Get The Best Deal I Can. I have seen countless listing that use stolen PHOTOS of bike. The real risk of fraud is on that end, not in actually receiving a stolen bike.

It's an exageration, but the comparison is correct. You saying you don't care if items are stolen is excedingly selfish. Yes, you are not doing the actual stealing, but that doesn't matter. Maybe someone else is out a couple thousand dollars, or lost their favorite ride, just because YOU dont care whether the bike you're buying is stolen. YOU are contributing to the bike theft industry by fueling it with your money.

As someone who has had bikes stolen, and worked in a shop that was stolen from by an employee, I can honestly say that if I found out you knew your new purchase might be stolen, and didn't do anything about it, I would be seriously pissed. What kind of low human being thinks they have more of a right to snag a deal than someone else has to keep their own damn bike? not going to lie civiccoupe, you make me a little bit sick.

What a load of crap. The more I read that newsletter, the less I like it.

Face it - eBay is cutting into his business and he's got a hair across his a$$. ANYTHING you buy on eBay COULD be stolen - WTF knows. I have purchased AND sold several bikes and a multitude of bikes parts. It's a GREAT way to buy and sell, and I have NEVER been dissapointed in my purchases.

How many potential buyers on eBay ask the seller if the item is stolen? I would guess close to none. Members here have won items on eBay for far less than expected. I recall reading several threads about “eBay finds of the year” I guess the question for “2006civiccoup” is, would you still buy the items knowing that they are stolen?

What's the point? It's illegal to sell or buy stolen items whether it's on ebay or at a bike shop.

+1!
Add to the list of illegal; Possession of Stolen Property!
The charge that is applied to a "fence". Fence = a persom who knowingly buys or accepts stolen property.

2006civiccoupe, what is your exact address? And what hours are you at work? Does your house have an alarm system? Do you own a dog? What breed? Are you a heavy sleeper? Do you have room/house mates?

Oh, no reason, just curious!

OK - let's get practical here:

1) Don't buy anything on eBay because it MIGHT be stolen?

2) ASK the seller if it's stolen first?

I am sure LBS owners would love it if eBay didn't exist, but I don't think eBay is going away.

For me, it comes down to a judgment call. On most auction items, it's easy to tell the scammer or people selling stolen goods from legitimate auctions. People looking for an off-eBay sale, short auction times, vague descriptions, etc. These raise a red flag for me. Caveat emptor.

I used to see old homeless guys riding expensive road bikes (clipless pedals and street shoes to boot) and assume they were stolen. Then I saw higher end road bike on the street during the yearly "put your trash on the curb" week. I rethought my assumption.

Many Ebay bikes may be stolen and Ebay should help buyers figure it out. Perhaps Ebay should work with somebody like stolenbicycleregistry.com to help lessen the risk of stolen bikes on their site.

I thought >60% of new bikes for sale on Ebay were Leader bikes- or it may just seem that way.

When ever I shell out alot of money on ebay I request for the party to either call me or let me call them. IF they are willing to communicate via phone, you can tell alot about the item. Most rational people who deal honestly will not have a problem with talking on the phone. I just purchased a set of zipp 606 wheels for 1200 off there and I had the guy take a picture with the wheels, him in it, holding up a sign with my name in it. I think if you set the conditions and the buyer abides by them along with ebay conditions then the items may truthfully be legit the majority of the time. Maybe I'm living in a dream world but it works for I have never had any problems with ebay.
