My 'understanding' is that Chorus and Record can be rebuilt. I always thought that Dura Ace can also be rebuilt as well.

I went in for a fitting for a Waterford RS-33 frame with Ouzo Pro front fork and when it came time to choose the groupset, comments like 'Campy's Chorus and Record' can be rebuilt but the Shimano's Dura Ace cannot.

Things like the Dura Ace levers regularly break while Campy's are much stronger.

Plus when I asked re: the Record groupset, I was told that distributors are shipping Chorus parts with the Record groupsets and the Record groupsets are not all Record components.

I'm not looking to start any flame wars but I must admit, I'm a bit perplexed.

After the whole Record/Chorus component 'mix', I'm leaning to Dura Ace and forgetting about Campy though I've ridden with Campy since the old Super Record days.

Anyone care to clear things up?

All Campy can be rebuilt. Shimano cannot be. Utilitarians like Shimano, until it breaks (albeit in many many many miles).

Sounds like your LBS had a Chorus group they wanted to get rid of.

The flaming can get bad. I ride campy BUT there is nothing wrong with Shimano or SRAM for that matter (Although SRAM is still on the proving grounds)....

I have never seen a Chorus part be pawned as a Record part....They are all marked, I am not sure it could be easily done.

I personally use a combo of stuff.....not everything campy is GREAT....can you say Ergobrain...lol I use Wipperman chains and a Chours cassette.....

I say to each his own BUT I think your LBS was passing some bad info....

They're good guys at the shop but that's why I posted here the questions.

With the bucks I'm spending on the Waterford, the groupset will be equal to or more than the frame so there's a lot of bucks riding on the choice.

Anyone know the retail price of a Record groupset, 2007 edition?

Pick the set that feels and operates to your liking. Modern groups, especially at the top end, are all very good and fairly reliable. They're not going to hold you back. Might as well pick the one that's going to make your rides the most enjoyable.

If you're thinking about keeping your equipment for 20+ years, then it might be worth sticking with Campy for the rebuildability, but that's a decision and a concern you'll have to evaluate for yourself.

A Record Group will contain all Record parts. The new stuff was slow to reach distributors so your shop may have been subbing some chorus parts.

If you want all Record, get all Record and make sure the shop didn't swap in some non-record parts. Retail is at most $1800. I assume you are buying the frame and the group from the same shop? They'll probably cut you a deal since they will make a good amount with everything else you are buying

You really can't lose choosing between Record and DuraAce. I think it comes down to how the brifters feel and whether you like the thumb tab on the Campy or the two lever system on the Shimano. You are already used to Campy, why not stay with it? Whether parts can be rebuilt or not has never been an issue for me and I ride plenty of miles.

The shop was recommended to me by Waterford. My guess based on the $1800 is that I'm not getting much of a deal.

The DA groupset was quoted to me at $2000 and the Chorus at $1735

I was told that the Record will come in approx $300+ dollars higher than DA.

The Waterford at full MSRP list with all accessories at retail pricing.

Now you see why I'm posting here. I feel as if 'something is not quite right'. But I could be mistaken.


I tend to keep my bikes and trucks/cars for many years. I'm a mechanic at heart!

just go campy and don't worry about it. chorus is all you'll ever need and then some. it's really easy actually.
put shimano out of your mind, and sram, please. come back to me after they've won dozen tours...

Ride a shimano bike, ride a campy bike, ride a sram bke if you want to. Base it off of the shifting.
