Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Measuring for a bike

My girl is purchasing a road bike pretty soon, but wants to buy used off craigslist or ebay.

My question is; What measurements should I take to determine the basic bike size for her and how does it relate?

I'm 6'1" and ride a 58," but does that simply have to do with my inseam and height?

She's 5'4," normal body length in proportion. What's a typical size bike for a person this tall?

I'd guess she'd ride a 48 cm or thereabouts.

But for the best bet, take her in to get fitted. Usually, you can roughly ballpark it, but it's never as good as getting a pro to do it.

And be sure to have her test ride.
