A different term for "pulling the trigger"

Not to be inordinately politically correct. However, I think it's better to just say "bought a new bike" instead of "pulling the trigger." Everytime, I see a title like that, it makes my heart skips a beat. Just my thoughts.

Dick Rhee 04-22-07 01:27 AM

While "So I spent my kid's college fund" may be more accurate, but it just doesn't have the same ring to it.

I don't know, I understand the sentiment considering what happened this week, but "pulled the trigger" doesn't seem that bad to me. Perhaps I'm just desensitized.

Johnny_Monkey 04-22-07 01:44 AM

How about "cry havoc and let slip the dogs of war"?

classic1 04-22-07 01:57 AM

I agree. The phrase 'pull the trigger' is annoying. I'm not PC about it or being sensitive after this weeks events like I think samsation7 is alluding too. Its just getting a bit old.

What about 'slapped the cash down' or 'unleased the fury'? Or simply use the word 'purchased'.

993guy 04-22-07 02:22 AM

So, what should I say if I actually "pulled the trigger?"

brianallan 04-22-07 02:27 AM

"just made an irrational purchase based on a sick consumer fetish bread in to me by the capitalist machine that is crushing our lives"

"dropped some dollaz to get dropped by the group"

"just purchased a product that I'm not going to be noticeably faster on than my 1995 steel bike with downtube shifters, and will certainly be less reliable"

"bought some plastic parts whos integrity will be compromised if the bike tips over and hits the ground"

WCroadie 04-22-07 03:00 AM

I understand what you are saying, but I think it's ok to say pulled the trigger. It's a bike forum and we all know what is meant by that phrase.

VT to CA 04-22-07 03:29 AM

How about "Chainsawed the head off of"... that politically correct enough for you?

I just chainsawed the head off of a pair of new DA calipers...

gayest thread ever.

ROTFL!!!!

:D

bbattle 04-22-07 05:52 AM

"dropped some serious coin"

"sold the farm"

"the wrath of a thousand viragos will thus be brought upon me for my actions"

"drope the hammer"

"dialed it up to 400 watts"

Nice! :D

People don't kill people. OCP bike porn threads where people use the phrase "pulled the trigger" kill people. Apparently.

Maybe if our society demystified guns to the point where you could actually have an intelligent dialogue about them without anyone's "heart skipping a beat" we'd actually make some progress.

barba 04-22-07 06:38 AM

I don't know that the gun overtones bother me (I think we can linguistically process that we are not talking about firearms), but I find it a stupid phrase. It is up there with "winning" things on ebay on my list of least favorite purchasing lingo.

aikigreg 04-22-07 06:42 AM

PC has truly been the death of us all. We're dead. We're zombies. We just don't know it yet.

What color is your bike?
New and Improved: The Over $3000 Roadbike Thread
Personality Test
+ $3000 bike thread
Damit, my account got hacked again.
etc, etc, etc.

I think I have my first candidate for the "Ignore Post By" feature.

Cyclist01012 04-22-07 07:58 AM

OK it we want to drop the phrase "Pulled the Trigger"

Letas also drop such terms as "Bike Porn" "Wheel Porn" or any other form of Porn.

And then let us get rid of the term Biffiter or however you want to spell it. Its a term that oly exists on bike forums. Go into a bike shoip and ask for one and they are going to give you a blank look and say " You want what?"

Then maybe people should make sure they use the words bulid up or assemble when the are assembling a bike. They are not building it. They are not sitting down with a mold and laying up their own carbon frame or fork. Then are not sitting dowm with a billet of Ti or aluminum and making a part. NO you are assembling something that came out of a box.

jsharr 04-22-07 08:02 AM

In the spirit of R600Durace, I would like to remind you all that:

Not buying bike is for wussy.

Carry on.

chipcom 04-22-07 08:08 AM

My dog was once ***** by a poseur in TMobile kit, so please refrain from using 'screwed the pooch' - it makes my heart skip a beat. Thank you for your cooperation and patience in this matter.

HigherGround 04-22-07 08:26 AM

Damn, I always hate posting after chipcom. He's a hard act to follow. (I hope that phrase doesn't make anyone's heart skip a beat, or stomach lurch.)

Any way, here's my contribution: "I opened my suitcase of courage and took out my Master Card so that I would soon be dancing on the pedals."

Little Darwin 04-22-07 08:50 AM

What better term to use to symbolize the end of a hunt for the bike of your dreams (within financial limitations)?

However, I vote for "Made the leap" Of course, it could b mistaken for trials, bmx or X-games, but such is life...

Will G 04-22-07 08:58 AM

Went medieval on the mastercard!

a77impala 04-22-07 09:06 AM

I have a bike "in my sights" at the local LBS. Maybe my interest is just "a flash in the pan" although I may be "half cocked" in wanting a "fully loaded" road bike. Oh heck, I think I am going to "pull the trigger" on this one anyway!

ranger5oh 04-22-07 09:12 AM

How bout "took out a mortgage"

Damn bikes these days are expensive!
