Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Frame is a Serotta with a really crappy 80's paintjob originally.

Pathdoc - 7sp. This one is a 13-21. I also have a 12-24 and a 12-21 around here, but I'd like to find a 12-26 for my second wheelset.

I BLAME LOWCEL!

Dang him, dang him all to hell.

I really wasn't planning on doing this, I really really wasn't, not all that soon anways. But now, I just don't see much worth in waiting. The Serotta build is being swung in another direction. It's going to be a few weeks yet till it's done because of it, but oh well.

New Build Plans for the Serotta:

07 Chorus Ergo Shifters
06 Alloy Record Crank
06 Chorus Bottom Bracket
06 Centaur Brakes
06 Centaur Front Derailleur
?? Centaur Rear Derailleur
?? Cassette
?? Wheels (going to use the Flyte's Fulcrum 5 Evolutions for the time being)

Everything else is remaining the same.

So what of the Super Record group? Of the wheels? of everything else? Easy, one word: Gazelle.

$255 base price
$40 extra paint cost (tri-coat color)
$40 decals

David went above and beyond on the frame, spending extra time to ream the seat tube, chase the BB threads, install a headset for me, etc.

Very cool, did he order the decals for you or did you have to get them from Serotta? I just picked up a Serotta Colorado II that I'm looking at possibly refinishing

Are you going to increase the rear spacing to 130mm? I'm debating whether or not to do the same.

I've already fit one 130mm wheel in the dropouts, so I'm going to leave it as is for now. I have 2 steel frames that were made for 6/7sp wheels that both can fit 130mm wheels without any real problem.

I keep scrolling through this thread as a reminder of my love of cycling over all the other garbage threads I've been wasting my time with.

Each time I see this thing, I keep wanting to say something. I keep wanting to give an idea, advice, opinion, or something. However, as my mouth hangs half open from its glowing redness, I realize this build is coming together so beautifully that I have very little to say except.....

I would try the same thing, but I'm a bit concerned that that may cause one of the stays to open-up/ spread more than the other (i.e.: 2.5mm on one side and 1.5mm) on the other.

On the other hand, I'm not too thrilled about limiting my wheel choices to only those w/ 126mm hubs.

Therein lyes my dilemma.

If you're concerned, have your LBS cold-set (bend) it. They have the tools to make sure it's all aligned. Me? I wouldn't sweat it.

Thanks. I've heard of that and may look into it.

Oh, and Cuda --- great bike & paintjob. Looking forward to seeing the next pics w/ the updated components.

Ok, enough waiting. Here's the photos of the reappointed Serotta. Forgive the lack of a front tire, I didn't have another tube with the correct length valve stem. The pictures are not the best, but all I could do at 11pm in my apartment. You can blame jsharr for the delay, he's been over here to work on his Falcon. We were installing some of the parts that came off the Gazelle... pictures of that bike in the next post.

So I couldn't very well let the Super Record group sit around. And I've been wanting to be free of the half Shimano - half Campagnolo situation on my Gazelle Champion Mondial. This of course was the perfect opporutnity to resolve that. So everything that I quickly pulled off the Serotta soon found a home on the Gazelle's frame.

I have to admit that I like the look of the Super Record on the Gazelle more than I did on the Serotta. Between the wheel situation, waiting for a part or two to come in, I had been dragging my feet a little to get the Serotta built. I also wanted to give the paint plenty of time to completely dry before I clamped anything on. Now, I am glad I did. Looks like everything is going to shape up just the way I ultimately figured it would. Just a little ahead of schedule. Seems to be the trend with this bike.

Gazelle version... guess this would be 2.0...

Viper - in real life it looks at least 2 miles deep.

gattm99 - I actually had to go look up that acronym.

Not sure if I really dig the look of the 'black' Michelin Pro Race 2 tires on the black AC 350's against the red frame. A true black tire like a pair of the Vittoria Rubino Pros would probably look better. I've got a set here, one is boxed and the other is on the front wheel currently on the Gazelle. But if I pull the Pro Race's, not sure where they should end up. I officially have too many options on too many things. I did realize I now only have 1 Shimano equipped bike. And no, that one won't be changed over for Campy. It's fine just the way it is.

The Gazelle's new build puts it with a set of Tubulars and eventually I'll figure out a clincher set too for those days I just can't risk flatting on a tubular.

Give it some time, the grey may grow on you. I too was like you and was slightly disappointed in the Grey/black of the PR2's on my Trek. I then swapped to black continentals, and thought the world was all right again. It was later that I found I actually like the grey/Black just as much for it provided a subtle level of detail to the bike that seemed to be missing with the all black.

It's not that I prefer it more, rather it is just something slightly different for the time being.

Call me crazy, but I like swapping back and forth Currently I'm running the grey/black PR2's

Thanks for the pictures Viper. Picked up the tubes I needed to mount the front tire tonight. Oh, and a package arrived today.... the Chorus Ergolevers that started this new round of madness. Now watching ebay for a cassette and rear derailleur.
