Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

You know cuda, I just had an idea. Since you're working on the retro look with a newer set of shifters, I couldn't help but wonder what two seperate bar tapes (red and silver) would look like in that funky criss-cross pattern.

^^^^ Exactly. Imagine that in red and silver, and maybe even some silver hutchinson comp tires to go with?

Sorry cuda, I know you have your plan, but I just can't help myself with all the wonderful possibilities.

I like the tires. The silver is a nice something 'different' than all black, and is different enough to set it off from the black. The charcoal pro race is starting to grow on me a little after seeing it a step back on Viper's Trek. I'll mount the front one tonight.

As far as bar wrap, going to stick with the pack of Specalized S-Wrap for the time being. I currently have a 110mm stem on the bike now and may need to step down to a 100mm. The last thing I want to do is spend 4hrs on a wrap job to then have to remove half of it for a stem change. And likely destory the tape in the removal process. That is one big plus about the S-Wrap is that it has a semi-tacky backing to it that is easy to pull up and replace if I need to do a re-wrap job. Both the Gazelle and 'Cuda run this tape and I love the feel of it to boot. I did see some of the silver 'carbon' weave tape at the LBS that I considered. It's a little thinner than the S-Wrap and similar to what I have on my Flyte. That might be worth considering down the road as well.

The Shifters are sitting at home and will be installed tonight. Tomorrow I'm going to order the additional housing I need for the shifters and a set of cable stops for the braze-ons. I'm watching several cassettes and derailleurs on ebay over the next 2-5 days.

Chorus ergolevers installed and the brake cables run and setup. Ordered the extra silver housing for the derailleur cables yesterday, and picked up an all-alloy Centaur rear derailleur off ebay over the weekend. Only parts needed now is a cassette and chain.

On the tape - when I built my Palo Alto, I wasn't sure about the stem length, either. I temporarily taped the bars with good old sports tape from the local drug store - you know, the kind of stuff you put on the end of a hockey stick. I rode it for a couple of weeks that way with no issues other than it looked like crap. Sure enough, I decided the stem was too long and changed it out. The sports tape came off easy and the R/R of the stem/bars was a snap.

Speaking of the Palo Alto - I hope it wasn't my build that caused you to re-think the retro or modern thing. I'd hate to think I caused you grief and anguish - not to mention more money......

BBM - it certainly put the idea in my head again and showed me how good it could look. But I still blame LowCel mostly.

In other news, weather looks to be getting slightly better (dang was that a wild morning of weather today!) and the bikes are slowly getting back into working order one at a time.

Cool - I've been catching enough crap lately as it is. I'm over-quota for the week.

Little bit more work being done towards completing the Serotta. I'm holding off running the derailleur housings and cables from the bar because I'm considering swapping bars before all is said and done. Tonight I did install the downtube cable stops on the shift bosses (exciting I know! ) and the rear derailleur housing. I also did some measuring and test fitting to ensure I get the best fit possible on this bike. I think I may need to go with a slightly shorter stem, but I think I'm going to go with this one for the time being. The top tube on the Serotta is slightly shorter than the Gazelle, but the wider bar (42 vs 40cm) on the Serotta negates that to a fair degree. So wondering if the 10mm longer stem will be too much of a reach for long distance riding. Cinelli stems are getting harder to come by in good condition. I actually stripped the anodizing off this one to clean it up some as seen here:

And lastly, a good closeup of the beautiful alloy Record crank. I am constantly amazed at just how smooth the BB on this bike is. The slightest touch will send it spinning, even with the off center weight throwing the balance off slightly.

I'm hoping to have this bike done next week, but if I swap out bars it may be a little longer.

Update:

The Good News: New bars are on their way, one of the last remaining NOS Cinelli 66-42 bars out there with dual cable grooves. Going to have to sell a few of my other stocked Cinelli bars to pay for this one, but wasn't too bad. The chain (campagnolo veloce) and cassette (campagnolo centaur 13-26) arrived a week ago. Now have all the parts to complete the build... except...

The Bad News: Frame was taken back down to Southwest Frameworks 10 days ago. There was apparently some paint bonding issues which caused several fairly large chips of paint to literally fall off under my thumb. David is taking care of the problem and I hope to hear from him soon on a ETA of the frame. He's been having some problems with flooding in his shop from all the recent rains here in Dallas though. I just hope to have it finished for HHH this year.

Bummer is right. End of the week or this weekend I plan to drop by his shop to see how progress is going, and to pick up my wheels and bar/stem that I left on the bike when I dropped it off. I'd like to get a ride on those AC350's with the Flyte some time soon. See what 400g off a wheelset can do for the bike.

NEW UPDATE!!!

Good News: David emailed me today and said the frame will likely be finished by week's end. I'll then likely put it in the corner for another 5-7 days to make sure the paint is fully setup before starting to build it.

Other News: My new wheelset for the Serotta arrived a day early! I won an auction on a set of Daytona (old name for Centaur) laced to Open Pros. They look in very good condition. A bit of cleaning here and there, decals are in 9 of 10 condition. I only need to find a set of QR skewers for the wheelset and I'll be in business. I've decided to sell the American Classic Sprint 350's I had bought for this bike (link to FS thread in Sig) since they really weren't the wheels I was looking for on this bike and don't expect to need that light of a wheelset.

So, other than getting a cassette moved from one wheelset to another, I have everything I need to build the Serotta. If I get the frame back this weekend, I'll likely designate some time the following weekend to do the build. I also have a wheelset for my Gazelle to build over the next couple weeks to get that bike's rebuild completed.

This, boys and girls, is why you need 4+ bikes. When one is in paint, and one needs wheels, you still have a choice between the GO FAST aluminum 10sp bike, and the "Sunday Cruise" steel frame with friction shifters and 28c tires.

A bit more 'old' gets into the mix of this New meets Old build. I found that the spare set of Campagnolo Nuovo Record QR levers I had (just sitting on my filing cabinets waiting for the right wheelset) fit the new Daytona hubs nicely. The rear skewer is a bit bent from a broken axle, but with a couple new springs up front they will finish off the new campy/OP wheelset nicely. The Daytona hubs have a very nice click to the freehub, typical of a campy hub. A little higher in pitch than my campy built Fulcrums, but fairly close.

P.S. - now offically ITCHING to get this bike back and get it built. Looking back at the photos and looking over at the last piece of the puzzle sitting across the room is killing me. Best go back to the other room and watch the TdF.
