Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

thats alot of electronics. Does the GPS work well? Does it show street maps and tell you where to turn etc. if you tell it a final destination?

Not if they're compact geometry. I like new nice bikes just as much as the next person, just none with compact geometries and tons of sponsor decals everywhere.

This is the basic Etrex. Its accurate within about 10-15 feet. I orginal bought it 4 years ago to mark fish hides on trout streams. I does not have street maps. Newer models do. I do load routes in it and it does tell you the turns. I also use it to mark points of interest when when I see something I want to come back too. I also use it to download the ride into a topo program for elevation data. I can also download it into an Excel file to log the ride. This allows calculations like rate of climb. Percent grades of hills. I have the HR monitor because I'm a cardiac patient. I have a very minor mitral valve leak and Arrhythmia. This problem is what got me back into cycling. In the last five years I've been able to turn the cardiac problem around with diet and cycling. I use the HR monitor to stay within training zones and endurace on climbs. The Ciclosport is a new ad. I wanted a barometric altemeter. If I bought a new Etrex 305 it would of had this built in as well as the HR monitor. But I decided to just get the Ciclosport. Whats nice is I set each on a different display, so it a quick glance I get all the info at once. Instead of waiting for the cyclometer to scan the display. I know its a bit much for some folks. But it has really help me improve my riding skills. As I can analyze my rides and see were I had problems. I will add cadance as my training progresses. But for the momment I watch the HR and shift by feel. You just got to realize the heart lags demand by 60-90 seconds. I'm a Broadcast Engineer by trade. So I got to have gagets to tweek.

You've been picking up some really good ones, I remember you posted that Peugeot a while ago. Lucky man!

Chalk another one up for the old bike crowd:

Third or fourth-hand 80's Triumph (made by Raleigh, says so on the bike) Renyolds 531c, Bocama Competition 83 lugs. My second-ever road bicycle.

Reflective tape is super bling...
https://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j2...t/100_1497.jpg

The wheels that were on it were super-crap, so I built some better ones with ultegra 6600 hubs and Velocity aeroheads. Kept the original 6-speed shifters, just switched over to friction. I for one, don't need no steenking brifters...

I tried a Madone, a Six13, and others when testing new bikes, but then I found this at a small bikeshop and the search was over. I'll probably have a Six13 sometime too, they are very nice, but don't have lugs... God I love lugs...

Is 23 too young to be a retrogrouch?

They are Sakae and they say "GT" near the clamp. I assume they came on the bike. So far they seem quite comfy.

Scott Speedster S20

I just got my new bike (Scott Speedster S20) home yesterday evening. Today I went out for a short 10 mile ride with some nice climbs and am just astounded by the climbing ability and how the bike handles and feels on the road. I'm also loving having 10 speeds, having only 8 on my previous bike (Felt F90).

Nice bike, Dude! I love that color combination. If you don't mind me asking, how much did that cost? I am in the market for an aluminum bike to add to my stable but I want to stay under $1500.

I paid a little over $1600 for it. I was going to wait until Fall to get it, hoping that the price would come down, but after I test road it I knew that i had to have it for this season. Yeah, I love the color combo too!

Got myself a Tarmac

Got it yesterday. Been looking to switch over to carbon from a metal matrix. God, this is buttery smooth. It dampens out all of the high frequency vibrations that I could feel in my old bike. No jarring and I lost about 3 to 4 lbs in overall bike weight (talk to me if you want a 56cm Specialized Allez M2 Comp with full 105)

Took it for its initial shakeout tour today. Everything is stock except the Bebop pedals (best. pedals. evar!). I probably gained about 2 to 3 mph on the flats.

Tested this, the Scott CR1, and the Orbea Onix. Liked the Scott the best, but it was also $700 more to get the same spec'ed bike (I got set up with the owner of a bike shop I used to work at in college). Specialized was a close second, and the Orbea was dead last. I was REALLY disappointed in the way the Orbea felt. I was expecting a lot more. Wanted to get a more boutique bike (hence Scott and Orbea) but this was definately the best bang for the buck.
