Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Woooo so great. Glad to know that a beautiful frame isn't going to waste!

Talk to waterrockets. I believe he had the exact same "problem" on his used Madone. AFAIK he continues to ride it with no problems.

Yeah, not that I don't trust my LBS, but I googled it anyway. Seems to be a common issue. The first thing that pops up, is an issue a guy had in the exact same spot as me. The second was a FAQ from Trek saying yeah our paint cracks deal with it, it's safe. Go figure. The owner of the LBS put some serious lateral force on my frame to check it to see what happened, and nothing did. When I got home I did notice, another crack in the non-drive side chainstay right at the lug now. I kinda want to retire it before it gets too bad. It is a great looking paint scheme, just not great paint, it seems. IDK, I am just glad it is safe to ride, and I can keep enjoying it, and I won't be stuck with a TCT 4.7 frame.

I've had the bike since Oct. 2008 but never showed it here. Basically a stock 2008 Tarmac Elite.

Picture taken during early Spring '09 ride around Lake Geneva, WI. It was a windy day and the bar tape is not pure white anymore . Lots of fun this season. Love the bike.

OCLV-- I was gonna tell you that it just looked like a cosmetic scratch, but then I see you figured that out. I think people can be a little too nervous when it comes to CF sometimes. Don't get me wrong, I would never ride a cracked CF frame, but paint scratches are pretty common on bikes. I'm glad the frame is okay, very cool bike.

Also, that prince is my dream bike except w/ campy instead of sram

I did consider Campy but the price / performance value for the SRAM Red was so great that I went with the Red and I wanted to keep the bike under 11k. I spent the money on the other components: Stem, wheels, handlebars and Brakes

Dunno -- 'cuz they can? I know they'll say something about lateral stiffness and vertical compliance , but I think it would be as much about marketing and individualistic style.

The funny thing is that I like that frame a LOT better in plain colors than in their usual multi-colored swirly pattern. The actual shapes of the frame come through really well.

lol!

I didn't know if there was some "aero" reason or whatever for it.

It actually is a paint crack, not a scratch. The clear coat is actually still fine, and the material is smooth. It is under the clear on the base coat, but above the CF. The thing that freaked me out, is on Sunday, when I was riding in Columbus I stopped by a Trek Store, and one of the guys commented on my bike, and sparked a conversation about it. He told me about a customer who had one crack and they gave him a new Madone. I was like that's cool and all, but I don't like the Madones I'd rather have the 5200. Then when I got back to my friend's house I was wiping it down, and noticed the paint cracks, and I figured that must be where the creaking I've been chasing around was coming from. I've already replaced the BB bearings, and the pedals, but it persists on extremely hard efforts. So given all those circumstances, it led me to believe it was the frame at that point. I am glad it isn't though.

I put some Fizik Micortex bar tape on yesterday. I love it. Matches the anodizing on the wheels perfectly too. Had to update since I got that nasty Cinelli cork crap off.

For ****s and giggles, my commuter bike I inherited from my dad, that got me started on road cycling. I had it at work too, so I figured I would snap a pic of it too.

Here are my current road bikes.
The Litespeed is my new bike, full Dura Ace 7800 gruppo. I got it NOS, frame had never been set up.
It just wants to go fast. I am able to rip 40-50 miles very comfortably at 18mph average.
I plan to upgrade the wheels (Xero XRG currently) to Mavics or Reynolds or something else I can track a good deal down on..

Jake the snake has been set up for road use and has been a great bike for 10+ years. The 105 gruppo has performed flawlessly with basic upkeep. jake will be an early season/commuter/out with the kids type bike from now on.
I love them both!
Next up is a Lynskey HB 330 or Helix.

That tape does look a lot better. Love the look of fizik, hate the feel.

Yeah I might have to start wearing gloves. I will sooner or later anyway, I bet gloves year round will make the tape hold up a little longer. I haven't worn any on a roadbike ever except for in cold weather. I saw Fizik makes gel pads for under the tape. I was thinking of trying that out.
