Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I s'pose if you're gonna go carbon you may as well go all the way. I built the bike bit-by-bit (it took 7 months) from online specials, clearouts, blowouts and ebay auctions. The only used items were the wheels - owner said he only rode them once for a test and went back to his Reynolds DVs.

After 15 years on the same trusty bike, I decided to upgrade.
I acquired this Cannondale on Monday.

I don't know how I survived so long with down-tube shifters!

I guuess I can chime in now that I have a "real" roadbike.
Just bought a 2005 Jamis Quest which I'll pick up from the shop next week upon my return from a business trip to Denver-where I understand there are lots of bike shops to intensify my impatience.

Hi All,

Theres some nice bikes in here. I've been riding the same IF Crown Jewel since '98. Its still got 8sp DuraAce on it. Im going the 10sp route before next season. I've got a FSA Team Issue carbon crank on the way to replace the tired DA one. I plan to upgrade the fork to an IF 1" treadless too.

I still ride my first "nice" road bike. It is a 61cm Centurion Dave Scott Ironman Expert. It stands out against most others since it has the white and smoked blue paint (most others are awful bright colors). Along with all SunTour GPX components. I ride the bike a lot and it has never given me a problem. it is also very light, I'd say around 15lbs. Other than usual upkeep it is a great bike. For something 15 years old that is not too shabby.

It works for me.

My bad boy is nothing much to look at. It's been through some rough times since we joined up together that fateful night at the bike shop. I had only so much money in the bank account and the price was right and I just wanted to ride...so off we went into the humid Houston night...

Okay, so it's just a 2000 Trek 1000; run of the mill entry level bike with Shimano Sora component group. I rode it like a madman the first ride out and ended up crashing it in front of my parent's house (some gravel got the best of me) and I knew I was hooked.

Many miles later I moved to Austin for a year and rode it even more. Dropped 75 pounds on those hills and ended up breaking a shifter, which I was able to replace with a $40 RSX shifter I picked up from the dude at the bike counter at REI (Thanks, man). Also had to upgrade the wheels - I was on mile 30 of a 50 miler and the rear wheel gave out; I'm not kidding -> the stock Vuelta rim separated from itself and I had a nice cab ride home. Went down to a LBS and got a sweet deal on a set of Mavic XP21s with Ultegra hubs.

Rode even more and even left work early to get out on the bike by 6 pm and ride until 10 pm (I was a madman - the hills will do it to you). My boss started wondering how I could ride for so long and do my job...I didn't have a good answer so some folks at the office did some sniffing around and decided to fire me for gross incompetence! If riding is more important than my job than I am even more grossly incompetent than Homer Simpson and Peter Griffin put together!

So I got cut loose and became depressed. I was able to get a job at a bike shop but it couldn't pay the bills like my cushy office job so I went back to the planet Houston and moved back in with my parents. My first ride back in Houston and I did my first century like it was nothing. My Pop saw how passionate I was and, with the help of us watching the Tour that year, he paid for an upgrade to a full Ultegra group and it was on. Rode some more but never with the passion I had in Austin.

Then I stopped for a long time as it became evident that people here did not want to
hire me (maybe I shouldn't have been so blunt as to why I left my last position). So I stayed inside, played video games, watched cable tv, and went to topless bars (A good friend of mine felt bad for me and taking me to strip clubs was his way of making me feel better, which it it did but it did nothing in the job hunt). I also gained the some of the weight back.

Then I met my now girlfriend (not at a strip club - online at a web dating service), got a job at a bike shop here, and started riding a bit more since I helped my lady friend get into cycling. Of course, bike shop wages don't help with the bills so I sold the Ultegra group - piece by piece. That hurt (I hope you guys are putting the stuff to good use).

And there, in the closet with R Kelly, my bike sat for a year. Two weeks ago I decided I wanted to ride again but couldn't go back to Ultegra. With the help of ebay I was able to refit my bike, in an almost Frankenstein kind of way. And here it sits, waiting to get back out on the road.

I kept the Mavics, though, and slapped on a nice pair of Hutchinsons with some heavy duty tubes inside (After all, this is Houston with its crappy roads and I am a big guy).

It's also got 105 F & R Derailleurs, Tektro Brake Calipers, Tiagra 9 speed flight deck shifters/brake levers (scratched all to heck), a decent set of Dura Ace cranks, and some Bianchi spd pedals.

Now, it might not be as nice as some of the other bikes I've looked at on this thread, it might weight a bit more than others but I'm not riding Paris-Roubaix or anything like that.

It's the only bike I've got and we've been through a lot together. The only things I still have from when I lived in Austin are my Jeep and my bike.

There are many bikes I have drooled over but I wouldn't trade mine for any other one out there.

It ain't pretty but it's all in one piece now, it's tuned better than ever, and right now it's asking me to go out for a spin in the night air...

...looks clear enough out there...

...where did I put those lights???
Three responses:

(1) TMI

(2) There is a point when cycling stops being a healthy hobby and starts being an unhealthy obsession. You passed that point.

(3) I think I heard a county western song about your bike . . . "My Ole Bike" (the word "bike" is pronounced with a very harsh twag, so it sounds almost like "bock") by Randy Travis. It made me tear up.

Here's mine. It's my commuter.
Trek 5000 with upgraded brakes and front derailleurs to a full ultegra set. (the 105's were fine for the way I ride, but I found the parts at a bike shop going-out-of-business sale).
I also removed all the trek decals.
