Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Crash.

On my lunch training ride. Ended up cracking the outside of my quad on rock in a creek, and seem to have a slightly sprained wrist. Luckily, full immersion cooled me off instantly.

Now I have to decide what to do about the crit on Saturday. It hurts like hell to pedal out of the saddle (wrist and quad).

@$#%@!!!

Glad you're ok...I know it's hot, but try riding the road instead of the creek next time, k?

We must do something about the growing threat water poses. A large puddle took down a guy I was riding with yesterday. Clearly the water is out to get us.

A federal ban on water is required to protect us; that's what I say.

Glady to hear you're sort-of OK, WR. I'd take this weekend easy.

+1 Dihydrogen monoxide is a really big threat

I guess I'll see how I feel in the morning. Registration for this race was $40, so I guess I'd actually try to get that back if I can't race. They'll absolutely fill my spot.

Any recommendations on treatment of bruised muscles? I'm going to pursue high hydration, ice, and anti-inflamatory. Anything else? As it is, it hurts just to stand

I'm close enough to you that I could fill in at the race, except for the fact that I haven't raced a crit since 2000, and really am not that good. Here's hoping for a speedy recovery.

WR, it would be worthwhile to see a doc in the next day or two. Doesn't sound like any big emergencies, but when it comes to the wrist you can never be too careful about missing small fractures, etc.

Glad you're relatively unscathed... How's the bike?

I have all my braking done before I get to the water, but the longer descent speeds me back up. I gently touched the front brake, and the front wheel goes out like I'm riding on an oil slick. This was at about 8 mph.

Well, I'm falling over off the left side of the paved water crossing, where the water is about 2 feet deep. I see this 2-foot rock/boulder that I really want to get beyond before I hit. My left quad nailed that, and my wrist hit the creek bottom.

I had 2/3 submersion, according my training partner. He crashed too, but stayed on the paved portion. No injury or damage on his part.

Luckily we had a good climb up Courtyard and Jester before this (if you know the area), but I had to climb another 320 foot 13% grade hill to get out of there.

I know exactly where you're talking about. I've almost gone down there twice before.

Sorry to hear about the mishap, WR.

For those not from Texas, it's been raining proverbial cats and dogs around here. I've got one water crossing that is typically maybe a quarter inch of water flowing over it after a rain. During a ride a week ago, I went through three different stretches of road covered by flowing water. I walked my bike through the typically shallow crossing since it was a good 6 inches deep and moving quick. The results of this presented a couple days ago during a flat when I discovered A) water in my front wheel and B) water in the Turbo Morph. If the animals start paring up, I'm looking for higher ground.

I swear I've been through there 100 times, and figured I had it mastered

Next time you go through, take a gander at that big undewater rock on the left and see if any of my quad is rotting on it.

This crossing has never been dry that I've seen -- even during last year's drought.

+1 There is a low water crossing I usually take to get to work (part of the trinity trail). So much water is still being released from a few local reservoirs that this crossing has been uncrossable for a few weeks. I have found a detour to avoid water in the bike.
