EX1855 06-19-07 09:20 PM

I just bought f'ing bike last thursday for christ sake off craigs list, give me a paycheck to get a cateye on there, jeesh, a simple answer would have sufficed

jjmolyet 06-19-07 09:39 PM

Not too simple huh?!? :D

ViperZ 06-19-07 09:50 PM

Sheesh, you people.....

The person asks a simple question in earnest, just answer it. Why do you have to rag or belittle them?

EX1855 06-19-07 09:53 PM

Because:

a) a college educated person should not have to ask it. The OP should get a refund from his college...clearly he didn't come away with much in the way of an education.

b) even if he couldn't figure out how to calculate miles per hour on his own, he also neglected to consult with Google, so is apparently computer illiterate as well as innumerate..

Bottom line...if representative of his generation, it's a sad commentary. Thankfully, I don't think he's representative.

I answered his question first....THEN I ragged on him. It's what I do. :D

I hope I was not your instructor at all. I don't mean to be an @$$, but if I were your instructor I would be really disappointed in myself.

Right, the MO here is to show how smart we are.....

Better than the opposite, IMO.

However simple, it was a legitimate question... Yet everyone feels the have to push him to the ground and then continue to kick him.

If telling people how stupid they are makes you feel smarter, I step aside, and you may continue.

But the opposite happens quite often, as well.

this is like when i used to go out to eat with my friend and her sister. my friend's a math teacher, and whenever the bill came she would look at it, divide the total by how many people were at the table, and tell everyone what they needed to put in. one evening, the other sister wanted to show that she could do that as well, so he grabbed the bill out of her sisters hand and said she would figure it out. so, she proceeded to use the calculator on her cellular phone to figure it out, which everyone at the table laughed at...

it's basic math, so being a math teacher didn't make the one sister any better suited to figure out what everyone owed anymore than the other sister, it's just that the other sister was stupid...

I love how tough everyone is over the computer:rolleyes:

Got to love the anonymity of the internet...

i love how there's still a generation of people that don't know how to operate the self-serve digital photo machine at the CVS Pharmacy in my area, so every time i go there i have to wait on a long line when i shouldn't have to, all because the johnny tri-bar in front of me can't do something simple like follow on screen prompts. that's not including the times i can't use the machine, because some judy tri-bar put her XD card in the SD slot, and blames the defenseless photo technician like it's her fault that she's stupid.

and no one's being tough, they're just pointing out the obvious. the average anything time based is the total (X) divided by the time it took to do it, that's common sense, and it doesn't take a math major to figure that out...

No if this was in person I would have been ruthless in ridiculing the type of ignorant **** up who claims to have "no use for math" or the type of school that offers a degree in "criminal justice."

As this was over a computer I just laughed at the incredible stupidity required to make a thread such as this.

You guys are brutal!

Actually, because of "rounding" some of the answers above are wrong. Here's the formula:

Miles...divided by minutes...times 60...equals average speed (in miles per hour)

Applied to the OP's data:

14 divided by 46 = 0.30434

0.30434 times 60 = 18.26 mph average speed

Bob

P.S. It is useful to know this formula even if you DO have a cycling computer because it can help you figure your ETA or how fast you have to go to make it to a destination by a certain time. (e.g. I have 20 minutes left to go 8 miles to get to the start of the Club Ride on time....8 divided by 20 = .4 times 60 = 24. Thus, you have to average 24 mph to get to the Club Ride on time.)
