what to look for in a headset for a commuter
I'm looking at campy record, stronglight, and maybe dura ace headsets. I'm kinda new to fancy parts and was wondering what i pay for in an expensive headset. stronglight is $20 less than the campy but campy has so much more a reputation. but i would hate to pay more for just a name brand. so basically, is it worth it to shell out a lil extra on a headset (i do want durable and long lasting parts) or would i mostly be paying for a name? i appreciate all info. cheers everyone.

I feel this way on soo many purchases, straight down to my graham crackers. Did they get thier name by advertising or incentives to lbs so they push them real hard, or did they get thier rep from experienced riders that have tried both of them. I haven't, so I won't say either way.

Pfft? For a commuter bike? Throw on a $10-$20 generic branded headset. There is ZERO sense putting on a dura ace, 105 etc.

Cane Creek perhaps? For me, headsets are one area where i don't feel it's necessary to buy the best you can afford. Hubs, rear derailuers, wheels? Yes. Headsets and front derailuers? Not really.
Don't cheap out, but don't worry about getting the best either.

Just get a $30 headset . It will last a decade even if you never grease or clean it after installation. WTF is up with all the high-dollar headsets unless you're just getting nuts about weight?
I have a 15-year old road bike with its orginial Ritchey headset.
