Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

How loud are trainers?

I'd really like a trainer. Besides the fact that it has rained just about every day for the past two months here in the Dallas area, I just think it would be really convenient for me.

However, I live in a third floor apartment with "hardwood" floors, and I'm concerned about noise. From what I'm told, you can really hear people walking, vacuuming - hell, pretty much everything. The guy who lives below me now is gone a lot, and he's very easy going, but I don't want make life hard on him.

So how loud are trainers? I'm looking at the 1UP trainer found here:
https://www.1upusa.com/bike_trainer.html

Or maybe a Kurt Kenetic Fluid trainer.

I have a Kurk Kinetic.

The fluid trainers aren't particularly loud, and I don't expect that it would cause a problem. Walking around will probaby be much more noticeable.

Bikes: Like everyone else, this changes from time to time.

Stick with a fluid trainer. I once had a magnetic while living in a second floor apt. My neighbor downstairs had no issue with it because she figured the noise was a piece of exercise equipment. But the guy living behind me filed a complaint with the complex management.

What was really interesting was that I was using one of the thick rubber mats designed for isolating the noise/vibration but it was pretty much ineffective.

Kreitler rollers are said to be very quiet. They just require a little more skill to use then a common trainer.

Get a fluid, you may need to put something under it. They make rubber mats for them, but if there is a problem you could add a rug to the mat.

I have a Kurt Kinetic, but since I got mine, it's become a diverse market
with a trainer designed for every conceivable niche. There are a ton of trainer threads here, search the archives.

Mostly I set mine in front of the TV, crank up an old hour TV show like Star Trek,
and get 45 min of exercise watching an old favorite. This winter it was The Adventures of Brisco County Jr.

I've got the Blackburn version of the 1up. Very nice, not very noisy at all. My wife can clearly hear my yelling at the cycling videos I watch while riding on the trainer.

1UP claims their trainer is the quietest on the market, but it's not a fluid trainer. I was hoping using a rubber mat would eliminate any noise or vibration transfer. Are there any videos out there of people using various trainers? I really have no idea what they sound like.

I had a Blackburn Mag trainer, noisiest thing on the planet. I now have a Cyclops Fluid, much quieter. I can watch TV at normal volume now.

A couple of things:

1. Use a completely slick tire, no sipes. Even the smallest amount of tread will make noise on a trainer.

2. Get a mat. The inudstrial mats they use for people who stand all day long in their jobs are great. Or just some Thinsulate from a camping store will also work.

This probably goes without saying, but when you get one, please catch up with your neighbor and let him or her know that you've got a trainer and make them feel welcome to notify you if it's loud or at inappropriate times.

I'm saying this as someone who is having a really hard time with an apartment neighbor (regarding loud music) and it's not a very pleasant situation.
