Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I was going to go out at 5:00pm for about 25 miles, but a heavy thunderstorm with tornado warning changed my mine.

Did a local loop here before noon. 26 miles and it was hot/humid. For once it was nice to turn into the wind. It cooled me off a bit.

Now for the fireworks! Color guard was postponed until tomorrow night. I guess we got weather coming in.

Nothing like a mid-week century to help get me ready to one-day STP. I suffered pretty bad, 80 degrees in Seattle isn't something I'm used to. But still managed to get close to 5 hours flat, so can't complain. Time to drink beer.

3 loops of Central Park, plus the ride to and from Brooklyn = 40 miles. I kept the pace up in the park where I could, but CP is notorious for the pedestrian traffic. I rode straight down Broadway through Times Square on the way home, there wasn't a NY'er in sight, just tourists.

Short jaunt of 49.63 miles at a 20.2mph average...in 100+ degree Phoenix, AZ sunshine!

That called for a well earned holiday nap...

Actually, for some reason I had Elmer's and Bugs Bunny's voices in my head. But then, that's not so unusual, though they do tend to get drowned out by Taz's snarling...

Was going to go on a nice 50 miler, got all my gear ready, couldn't find my bike, then realized that my bike was locked in a friends garage, and he was out of town, that put my plans out of commission.

I'm visiting my sister in the Nashville area. She has a Specialized hybrid. I got up this morning and rode it for an hour or so on a MUP called a "Greenway". It's a gorgeous trail wending through corn fields, woods, wetlands and along a good sized lake. It's really pretty here in Tennessee. I sure wish my road bike was here! But, the hybrid actually rides pretty nice. I'm just thankful I've been able to get a little riding in.

Did ~52 miles in NoVa. My wife dropped me off in Vienna (she was out walking with a friend) and I did this route followed by this route. My average speed is moving up! Today netted me 26.4kph. Not too bad considering the bulk of the riding was on the WO&D. The best part was stopping at a lemonade stand in Falls Church right off the WO&D and chatting up the mother & daughter. Gotta stop and smell the roses!

Yesterday I went out with my older son (15 years old) for his first ride on a road bike. He has a MTB that he uses to go back and forth to school (~1.5 miles each way). I set up a 23 year old Cannondale with down tube shifters, toeclips, and a 21 year old Brooks Pro saddle for him to ride. He declined to wear bike shorts.

It was hot and humid. It poured rain on us. He even "dialed it up" to 23 mph for a short bit. After 10 miles he said that his hands and butt were sore. We are doing it again on Saturday.

Did a pain inducing interval workout (5 x [4 minutes just below LT at 100rpm, 2 minutes all out at 75rpm]).

Then spent the day wrenching out my bike and making ribs.

The planets just haven't been aligned right for me...

I tried to go to the Austin Veloway (https://www.veloway.com). The first sign of impending disaster came when I noticed that my computer wasn't registering about 100 feet into my first lap. I stopped and fiddled with it, but it didn't seem to want to cooperate - odd, considering I've had that computer for three years and it always worked flawlessly before. After a couple of minutes, I said "screw it, I can time myself manually if I want," and got back on the bike. But, before I could get through even one lap, my front tire went flat, apparently when the patch I applied after springing a slow leak the night before failed. My feeble attempts to repair the tube in the field failed catastrophically when I guess the tire slipped off the rim and the tube blew out. Not having a spare, and with all of the bike shops closed for the holiday, I put the bike back on the rack and headed home.

In other news, understeer on a road bike is both scary and exhilarating.

I'm hoping to get a few pictures along the way.

Ok, here's the follow-up:

Made it to Bethany Beach by nightfall and was able to score a room for the night. Inquiries about the fireworks display yielded that they were cancelled both at Bethany and in Ocean City due to the winds. I rode into Ocean City the next morning and hung out on the boardwalk for a while. After getting something to eat, I headed out Route 50 to see if I could find lodging. The Bedtime Inn had vacancies, so I stayed there, checking out on Sunday morning.

The towns that I hit along the way were:

Havre de Grace
Port Deposit
Perryville
Chesapeak City
Middletown
Odesa
Dover (west)
Milford
Lewes
Rehoboth Beach
Dewey Beach
Bethany Beach
Fenwick Island
Ocean City

On the way back, I made a stop at Point Henlopen Park (which added another 10 miles to the return trip--thought I could make a shortcut there--I was wrong), made a wrong turn north of Dover and wound up on Smyrna Leipsic Rd which took me into Smyrna, Delaware. From there I followed Dupont Pkwy to Route 71 North. Routes 15 and 286 got me back into Chesapeake City, Maryland.

Here's the pics that I took, which include evening shots at Bethany Beach, shots of the Ocean City boardswalk and beach, Ocean City's fireworks (displayed Thursday night) taken a mile away from Ocean City at the Route 50 Park & Ride, and shots of the ponies on Assategue Island:

https://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v2...slideshow=true

I'm a little saddle-sore today, but all in all, not in too bad of shape.

Great Ride and nice pics to go along with it. A couple questions

1) Do you take along a lightweight backpack of sorts to carry a change of clothes?

2) I see you have a nice headlamp for night riding, which one are you using and would you recomend it to others?

3) Giant CF bikes rock - what kind of wheels are you riding with? they look a little different than my Ksyrium Elites.

Keep rolling

That's great - ~4.600 ft in less than 50 miles. I was whinning about that much climbing in a hundred miles.

Good Job

Don, I used a safety orange backpack with a waist and chest cinch. The manufacturer is The North Face.

The headlight is a Lights & Motion HID that I got on sale thru Nashbar. I definitely recommend it. Mine is the NiMH kind. The Lithium Ion version would be better. Having said that, I didn't need to recharge it during my excursion. I reserved it's use for when I absolutely needed it--like riding back to my hotel after the fireworks display in Ocean City.

I'm running American Classic CR 420s--1460 grams with a 35mm aero profile.
