your eyes get a good showering of UV rays with or without sun glasses. The light spills through the gaps between your lens and face.
Having said that ski and swimming goggles are pretty excellent, except they don't breath as well as cycling glasses.
Personally I use a specialized ArcTerra... fits my face pretty good with minimal leakage, lenses get darker when it's brighter... comes with a lifetime warranty too, which I dig.
Now I just worry about swallowing bugs, or bugs getting caught in my atmos vents...

I ride with regular sunglasses, but I'm going to have to invest in a pair of shades that don't have a frame all the way around the lenses. Sweat seems to pool up on the bottom frame. ewww.

What about the light that DOES get in? What about the lens the light passes through? I assume you're an eye doctor...but google returns about 1.6 million hits that might state otherwise (I don't have time to check them all...but here's one).

And when you link sites, choose a credible source, not ones trying to push a product. I recommend .edu and .org sites.

I commonly ride down a street with lots of construction but a bike lane, and cars have shot up little stones at my legs and face. Unfortunately, I don't have clear glasses, so even in the evening I wear my full sun glasses.

The light that gets in is so insignificant that it doesn't matter, unless you're actually staring at the sun, in which case you deserve to go blind. And I'm not an eye doctor, only a college kid. It's amazing what you learn in school.

Common sense says UV light is generally a damaging factor unless you can photosynthesize the energy. That's all...I'm not an eye doctor either.

my prescription rudy project glasses are pretty sweet. they are very aerodynamic too. they help me go fast. i wear regular glasses if it is too dark for sunglasses. i don't think i would want to go naked though.

Researchers have established a link between ultraviolet (UV) radiation and eye damage — particularly cataracts and age-related macular degeneration. Wearing sunglasses is the easiest way to protect your eyes from the hazardous radiation of the sun. They needn’t bear a designer label or cost hundreds of dollars to do their job properly.

I was an eye doctor, and I say wear sunglasses. Also, frankly, what kind of riding are you guys doing that stuff isn't flying into your face all the time? I, at least, try and ride over 5mph...

unless your prescription glasses come with a frame from the 80's... I don't think they would protect you much from bugs or debris. My prescription glasses are too small to protect my eyes from a bug...
I got one in my eye while wearing my prescription glasses, I crashed, and the soft tissue around my eye was itchy and swollen for 1 week. Damn bugs, hate them. It's a good thing I was going UP the hill on the granny gear.

When you're cool, the sun is always shining! With that said, my preference is for prescription-ground Rudy Project glasses with vermillion/copper tint with about 25% light transmission.
