Tour DAY France question

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Tour DAY France question

Tour DAY France.

That Bob Roll commercial kills me everytime I see it, but I digress...

The question that my wife and I have been "discussing" today is this- Didn't in years past, the tour issued 2 yellow jerseys each day. One for the stage winner and one for the overall time leader? I say yes, but my wife thinks I dreamed it. I'm positive someone on this list can help me out.

Thanks in advance.

No.

The yellow jersey has always (since about 1920) given the jersey only to the overall leader.

Yes, your wife is correct. There is only one Yellow Jersey and it is awarded to the rider who at the end of each stage has the lowest overall elapsed time for the entire race. Although it hasn't been done, it is possible to win the Yellow Jersey without ever winning a single stage.

Quick history of the Yellow Jersey:
https://www.angelfire.com/realm/cvccb...ddy/yellow.htm

Where you might be getting confused is that it IS possible for the stage winner to also be the race leader (Yellow Jersey) AND the points leader (Green Jersey) AND/OR the king of the mountain (Polka Dot Jersey). Heck, if this notional rider was under 26 years old and riding in his first Tour he could hold the White Jersey too. However, if the Yellow Jersey also is the points leader the individual in 2nd place in the points competition gets to wear the Green Jersey, etc...

Don't mean to hijack this thread but...

I was asking that question myself... How can someone win get the yellow jersey without winning a stage?

Thanks.

Since there are a large number of riders, it is possible that each stage could be won by a different rider who has very poor times in the other stages. If the same rider finished in second place right behind the winner each day, he would have the best overall time, even though her never wins a single stage.

This is an exaggerated example, but should illustrate the point.

Almost analagous to someone winning a tennis match with a lower total number of actual game wins than his/her opponent. Get it? Anyone play tennis?

How about an NFL running back that wins the rushing title without ever gaining the most yards in a single weekend? The running back that is consistent over the course of a season will gain more yards than any other runners that may have one or two good games but are only average for the rest of the season.

Actually, I think 2 riders have won the Tour without winning a stage. I'll do some research and post back.

I say the other day that there have been 6 times that the tour has been won by someone never winning a stage! I think the last time was in the 70's if I remember correctly but not sure about that.

The fact that all riders in a group coming across the finish line are given the same exact time could have something to do with this too. You don't lose any time on the winner of the stage if you are in the same group he is at the line. Even if you are the last one in the group.

The stage winner is given a time bonus, however.

the tennis match question's pretty straight forward. in a 3 set match, first to 6 game wins takes the set (must win by 2). so if you lose the first set 0-6, but win the second two 6-4, 6-4, you've won 12 games while your opponent has won 14. just the way the rules of the game are drawn up...

Are you sure about this?

Earlier in this Tour, Virenque held both the Yellow and the Polka-dot jersies simultaneously for one stage, and another member of his own team wore the climbing shirt in his stead.

Wouldn't the same be true of the Green?

I feel like Lance... the forum senses a weakness due to one error and is now launching more attacks!!!! (Just kidding)

Actually, this time I think my memory didn't fail me. A quick check of the TdF Website yielded the following info under Rules:

A r t i c l e 1 0 - Leaders' jerseys
Leaders in the general time, points, best climber and youth general time classifications must wear:
- in the first case, the "yellow jersey";
- in the second case, the "green jersey";
- in the third case, the "red polka dot jersey";
- in the fourth case, the "white jersey".

Leaders' jerseys will be worn in the following order: first the yellow jersey, then the green jersey, followed by the red polka dot and white jerseys. If a rider is leading in more than one general classification, he will, of course, wear only one jersey in compliance with this order of priority. The riders occupying the 2nd, 3rd or 4th positions in the corresponding classification standings will then wear the other jerseys.

Thanks, I was going by something I heard Phil Liggett say during that particular stage. Not the first time Phil's sounded sure about something that wasn't true.
