Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I hear that. At least you guys get to good bowl games - the Irish tank the lesser games. Well, at least they can say they almost beat USC back in 2005.

i don't and can't understand why someone would consider that more dangerous than having traffic on the road? is a peloton of 100 cyclists inherently more dangerous than a steady stream of automobile and truck traffic?

from what i've heard from friends who ride there but not with the pelaton is that some riders yell people and ride in ways that prevent cars from turning or passing. Only takes one bad apple to ruin something

Here's a very short clip I shot of the ride a couple months ago. It was a relatively small group that day.

So what's the typical speed on that ride? Is it 30mph? And is there a finish line sprint?

The group typically does 10 laps around the perimeter of the entire Rose Bowl facility which includes the Rose Bowl Stadium, a huge parking lot, an adjacent soccer field, and a golf course. Each lap is exactly 3.1 miles. They normally do 10 laps or 31 miles in roughly 65 to 70 minutes on average. They travel in an uniterrupted, continuous, clockwise direction. I'm not sure what that averages out to but they easily reach 35+mph on the clubhouse side of the ride.

Let's see, so 31 miles divided by 1.1 hours equals 28.2 mph average speed. Any accelerations or is it mostly at a steady pace?

The cop in the city council video said they clocked them consistently in the 30 to 35 mph range.

The peloton remains pretty steady but will gradually pick up speed on the clubhouse side mostly due to the very, very slight downward grade. But anything goes for the breakaways which occur frequently.

I've done the complete ride on various occasions, and the average speed is around 26-28mph, but this varies a lot depending on the mood of the guys at the front.

One side of the loop is slightly uphill, averaging 1-2% grade. Just prior to this is a small hill of about 4%. The other side of the loop is down, same grade. Going up the hill we slow to about 21-22mph, up the gradual grade, we do 25mph (on an easy night) up to 28mph (on a hard night). Coming down the other side, I have hit 39mph. The cop was probably taking pictures just before the down grade.

There are accelerations and decelerations. Just only within that range.

It is an excellent speed workout, allowing me to train so that criterium races seem to be moving too slowly (until the finishing laps).

No way. Pauley is U.C.L.A.'s pride and joy. Officially over 80 victories before their first loss. Unofficially hte UCLA varsity lost their first game there.

Thanks for the info. I need to figure out and excuse to get down there and try it out one of these days. Sounds comparable to the River Ride up here.

That video looked so cool.
About 6 weeks ago, the city (? or Rose Bowl committee) added a buffer zone around the pedestrian walking lane.

Now? The walkers, roller-bladers, baby strollers, recreational cyclists, joggers move into the buffer zone. Some go clockwise, some counter-clockwise. If they meet up with eachother, they swing wide out into the street to go around eachother. Of course, they rarely look behind them to see what danger they may be in.

The peloton is very good about staying away from the shoulder and peds--I've not seen anyone go into their walking space this whole year. And if any of us do get too close to the peds or cross the yellow line, we get yelled at by everyone else in the group.

No signs, though.

Perhaps the yelling is just cyclists urging other cyclists to push and the pedestrians are just misunderstanding what they're yelling since they don't understand the peleton or cycling.

The proposed ordinance is a 2-abreast riding limit. If this is enacted, couldn't the "peloton" ride be reborn as a "paceline" ride?
