Stupidity X 2
Two beauties today!
On my morning ride I witnessed a woman on a heavily traveled road, with a large shoulder for cyclists, riding her bike with her dog in tow on a leash. The dog seemed to be doing okay even though my first thought was how cruel this was. Couldn't help but think what might happen if the dog decided to stop, got distracted or if someone tried to pass her and the dog got rambunctious (I was going the opposite direction).
So I turn off and start to head home down some local roads. As I turn the corner from one road to the next, I see another woman with a dog on a leash. This was one of those 15' retractable leashes and the dog was literally on one side of the street and she was on the other. This was also a fairly big dog - German Shorthair. This could have really been a disaster for her, me or any other rider, the dog or an oncoming car! How stupid is this????

They should just get some roller blades and let the dog pull...
I'm sure they must have been thinking "I'll get two birds with one stone" They get to excersize, and take the dog on a walk... lazy...

Second one is darn dumb. Was at a party this weekend and a guy telling the story of how he got his finger wraped in the cord of one of those retractable leashes. His dog was chasing a dog in a truck. Anyway the cord cut off the index finger from the top joint. Never gave it a thought but those things are dangerous.

I actually saw that today. The guy was having one heck of a time keeping his balance. At least he had the sense to wear full padding (elbow pads, knee pads, wrist guards, and helmet), but I was just waiting to see a faceplant or something. I know if I tried that with my dog I'd be on the ground in seconds.
Retractable leashes should be outlawed. When riding around the Rose Bowl last week, a woman's dog decided a sniff a runner and the lady didn't have the stopper depressed so the dog got quite far. The runner swerved to avoid the dog and I got to swerve to avoid the runner. I was the only one who had enough brains to check for traffic before swerving into the middle of the road. I'd rather battle with fido and fat guy than a car any day!

not bike related but....my 15 imunte commute this morning turned into a 50 because there was a blond girl in a SUV parked in the middle of the road against rush hour LA traffic using her cell phone.
how did she end up going southbound on the northbound PCH is beyond me...

I saw this lady (in Honolulu) once on a bike and she had THREE Jack Russell Terriers on three different leashes running along side her while she rode. My wife thought it was the cutest thing, I was just waiting for one of those little dogs to get caught up in the spokes...

I see people do that with dogs all the time... I could never get my dogs that well behaved..
I have one that will beat those stories though..
I deliver stuff, and on one particular housing complex(I've seen this twice)
a Man on a gas scooter, was out exercising his dog..a little rat dog(not sure of the breed,
just tiny) I saw him go by once, and thought oh thats cute.. then he went by again and again, the
parking lot is kind of a big circle. I just couldn't help but notice, the man was the one really needing to lose weight...
