Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'm satisfied with both Voler and Performance. Perfs do wear smaller. Perf also has the edge on chamois comfort.

I just got 2 pair. All I can say is I love them. As good or better than my LG that cost 2x the price.

After much thread reading re: Hammer/Voler bibs, I'm still a little confused on the sizing. I see lots of references to taller dudes (6'3"/215+) wearing a large, but I am in that weird grey area (6'1"/200) and wear XL in Santini and DeMarchi. Anyone closer to my build out there who can advise? I already have a referral #

I'm 6'3", 228#, and have the Hammer/Volers in both L and XL. On me the L's are pretty tight but wearable, but I use them for shorter rides and use the XL's if I'm going over 30 miles or so. I think at 6'1"/200 the XLs would be a bit baggy. Don't own any Santini or DeMarchi, so I'm no help there. BTW, this year's version of the Hammer shorts doesn't have the white side panel. And yes, I too have a Hammer customer number I'll be glad to provide for that discount!

Damn! I like the white side panel. I like my bibs long in the leg, too. How is the difference in length between the L and XL?

I'm 6' 196 and the L fit me just fine. The length brings them about 2-3 inches above my knees (you may have longer legs so who knows). The are comfortable, I did my first metric in them last weekend.

I'm 5'7.5" 175lbs and wear the Performance Ultra Bibs in Medium. From what I've read in this thread, I should go with the Small Hammer Nutrition Bibs? This is kind of weird, especially for me who used to buy all my stuff 1 size too large because I wasn't used to such tight fitting clothes.

edit:
BTW, even more confusing is their sizing information seems at odds with previous posts... They state that 1) they are sized in the european system, so go +1 size if you're used to buying in US sizes and 2) if you're in between, go with the larger size.

I am confused. I have been using voler bib shorts for a few years and seemed fine with them. Lately it seems that I get to a certain point in my return commute (roughly mile 24) and my rear \ back start hurting.
Using the same bike and my giordana silverline bibs I can ride a century with minimal discomfort.
I still think voler shorts are a good value but wondering if my body has decided all of the sudden that they are not for me.
odd

Someone else will need to confirm this but I believe the most important metric with bibs is your height.

I'm on the same boat:
Waist: L
Weight: XL
Height: M

I hope someone gives feedback on this, I would figure height is more important as bibs don't have the same waistband as shorts; however, they would be my first bibs. My only other reference is that I wear M in PI; however, they tend to run a bit big for everyone from what I have researched.

I pm'd you, but really I think height is the most important when it comse to bibs. Sure the larger sizes have more room for girth, but the legs get longer and so do the straps. I am 5'8" with a 34-36 waist (I wear 36 pants, but they are usually much too big during prime cycling season) and I have a size L and M. The M are sooooo much better. The L give me about 1 inch between the seam and the beginning of my knee. The medium actually fit correctly.

Both are comfortable over long rides, but the L I have to roll up the hem on.

Another Hammer bib sizing question here: I'm 5'10" and anywhere between 205-220 lbs. Should I go L or XL??

fwiw, i'm 5'10" and weighed 180 pounds when i purchased my hammer nutrition bib shorts in size large. i'm now about 160-165 pounds and they still fit fairly well. i would like to try some in medium to compare, but the fit of the large ones is not bad enough to warrant purchasing some new ones. the strap length is fine for me, a touch long if anything, but the lower back/arse region is now not quite as form fitting as i would like. leg length is good overall although a touch on the long side for my taste. outside of that, my only other complaint would be the scratchy tag which loves to irritate my left love handle. not really a big deal as i could just remove it if i would ever actually think about between rides. hmm, maybe i'll do that now...

also, pm me if you want a referral discount

So in conclusion:

5'9", 33 - 34" waist, 185 lbs = medium

Sound about right?

i would recommend large unless you anticipate dropping some pounds and a couple inches off your waist.

Voler is comfortable, but I have had endurance issues with them. My Cannondale shorts are really comfortable and wear well. I'd go Cannondale.

Nah. Again, I am 180 5'8" 34-35 waist and the Mediums fit like a glove, and did even when I was close to 200 and a 36 waist.

BTW - just returned from a week where I somehow mush have done something different to my saddlebag resulting in a pair of my shorts wearing a hole completely through on the inner thigh. The pair with the hole - fairly new pair of Performance Ultra bibs (last year's model - bought last year).

Upon review my 2 pairs of Voler Hammer bibs not only held up to the same abuse, but where just showing small snags.

Again the Ultras had a hole in them the size of a quarter.

I have this year's ultra bib, hammer bibs, and a few others and the only pair that shows any signs of wear are the Ultra bibs. And only after roughly 500 miles. The seams on the chamois are nearly worn through.

I do like them, though, which is a shame because I'll not buy them again due to the durability.

on my recent BIB Odyssey i tired out some Performance Ultras. two rides and i decided to return them under their 100% satisfaction policy. you see, i was not satisfied . first, i went with a large since i am tall at 6'3''. they felt big. next, the material just didnt feel right. next the seems rubbed me wrong. they had to go.

later.

An easy way to end your odyssey, probably (at least it worked for me), would be to just do like I did and shell out some $$$ for a top of the line pair. I've said this before on other posts - I think the Hammer bibs are great, and all, for their price and I use them for every day commuting and training rides, but after getting some Gore Xenon bibs which cost nearly $200, I've realized there is more to be found in comfort and fit. There is no comparison between the Xenon's and all other brands I own - none costing nearly as much. Are they worth it? IMO, only if you are spending many hours in the saddle.

I'm currently eyeing the Forma Red and Assos Fi.Mille S5 to round out my long distance bibs triple threat.

^^^^ done.

one pair of Assos Equippes (F1 Mille Chamois). one pair of Assos F-13 S2s. one pair of Pearl Izumi Slice. i still want one more pair to round out the bunch. i may try the Hammer ones as they could be my weekly short ride choice. later.
