Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I've done TOSRV (back-to-back century) 5 times since 1990 but last time was in 2004. I'm more of a recreational rider but I would like to do some bicycle touring (if I can ever get more than a week away).

I have done 5 centuries this year, 2 organized and 3 solo. Two of the solo centuries weren't supposed to be solo, I was riding with one other person. In both cases he bonked at about mile 70. I still can't figure out why, I probably lead about 50 of the first 70 miles. Then the last thirty in each case was ride 5 miles, turn around and see he was not there, then wait at the next turn, then repeat the process again.

I do not really want to do centuries, it was just a goal I set for myself to do two. One was to complete an actual ride (Mt Mitchell), the other was to do one in under 6 hours w/stops. Managed both of those goals. So as of right now I am goalless for next year, as far as centuries are concerned.

I have no desire to ride more than 120 miles in any one day.

I don't keep track, but probably 40 - 50 in the last 10 years.

Haven't counted. Typically I'll get over 100 miles on 5 or so training rides a year. 2-3 organized centuries.

And this year I did a race with 2 100 mile plus stages. The number of 100 mile plus training rides was up this year in prep for the race. So I got in the teens for 100 mile plus days this year.

Only 3 centuries. Did not train for any of them. When I was riding a lot I typically did the clubs 60-70 mile ride on at least one of the weekend days and at least 40 the other. And during the time where work pernmitted a 60-70 midweek ride.

Oh I do have 4 doubles. Only trained for one of those the First Grand Tour I did. The only real training was the clubs 170 mile ride a couple of weeks before. Didn't do any training for the LAnd Rush, back to back doubles. I was told I would suffer big time on hte second day. It really reminded me a bit of a typical weekend Rugby tournament, same general soreness and tiredness. The only difference was that every part of my body was in working order, which was generally not the case at a Rugby tournament.

One this year. Just a regular club ride I led on the occasion of my birthday. I set it up with a metric century loop that went past the parking lot for people who only wanted to do 60'ish. The people I ride with are more about hills, so typical rides are 50-70 miles with 4-6k ft climbing. I have no interest in doing mass rides of any type, or doing distance riding just for the sake of distance.

When I went back to riding 3 years ago, I saw a couple of guys take off up a big hill like gazelles. I aspire to be a gazelle.

Wow. THAT is a ride. Looks like a bigger chunk than many are able to bite off (40% completion rate). And almost 15K ft climbing this year is a WHOLE lot more that the 9-10K in previous years. And the pain factor for those shorter, steeper climbs makes a huge difference. Whoa!

For 2007? 20 or so. 3 were sub-4:15 (one was 4:05).

I just did one yesterday, as a matter of fact..

3 so far this year and hopefully another 5 more before the end of the year.

I did one a month or so ago with my club and that was the first one that I didn't either get rained (and lightning) out of or crashed out of.

I've now done one each of the last two Saturdays and plan to do one each Saturday for the rest of the year. I ride 23.5 miles to our Saturday ride, ride 55-65 miles with the group, and ride another 23.5 miles home.

How and why do you all keep track of how many you've done?
Yeah, I'm not much into keeping track of these things either. I have a bike computer sitting around here somewhere, but it has never found its way onto my bike. I ride when the body tells me to ride, and I come home when I'm finished riding (or I need to be somewhere other than on the bike).

I have completed the Old Kentucky Home Tour Saturday century before and I've also completed a 100+ mile ride from Louisville to Bloomington, but that's about it.

Both of my centuries were completed without special training. I felt a sense of accomplishment when I finished OKHT for the first time(had only been riding 4 months). I took the 75-mile option this year, and sense that I'll ride many more metrics than centuries from here on out.

I don't ride a mind boggling number of centuries. However, I don't know how many I've ridden because I don't keep track, and I've done enough that individual ones do not stand out in my memory. I'd ride them more often if I had more time.

15k is the mapping software number, which is probably pretty generous. GPS numbers should put us in the 10-11k range. Whatever, it still f***ing hurt.

I never counted but I average about 6 per year and have since 1973, minus a handful of years I was burned out and took a break from riding. So I come up with around 150 or so. Pretty much my entire casual wardrobe is ride t-shirts. I've never found riding 100 miles to be hard. As long as it's far enough into the season to do 50 or so easily I'll do centuries. The only real preparation is I do is when I want to do a sub-5 hour century.

Here's mine (15 for 2007), but I never tracked them before I started using CyclingPeaks to log all of my rides:

~ 10 this year. I suppose technically only 7, but I have 3 more @ 155km that were organized and "advertised" as centuries (one was an advertised 165km road race that showed 154km on the powertap).

Last year was 15, but that was more planned. So.. 25 I guess, or 22.. or whatever. I stopped caring this year, so I have a lot of 135+ km rides that I would have ridden longer last year just to "bump the mileage" but I ride for time now and not distance.

I think I've got seven or eight since June this year. Total, lifetime? Probably under 20.

I have to ask. What is the total for 17.5 years ?
I've done 2 centuries both planned.

Total distance? 115,302.85 kms. I was a bit of a slow starter .... I didn't get into 7000+ km years until just 10 years ago.
