is it time for a history lesson? :p We used to be stickied. One moderator took exception to someone on here calling Yanks 'Septics' or 'Seppos'. Both wouldn't back down, so the moderator nuked our whole community. :) Sh1t hit the fan; the moderator was 'spoken' to for going too far; she didn't like it, so she spat it and left, then so did we....for a while :p

Complete rubbish. You dont eat babies like I do. The reason we dont get massive crowds is because 1) its difficult to give the consumer a wholistic perspective on the event when its on an open road and 2) you dont give them what they want (give them a vibrant exciting environment with easy access to piss, some vague idea of a sporting event going on around them and prospects of getting a root).
It has nothing to do with Melbournians having no interest in the sport. Its just they expect a world class show every week. They are the most giving sporting consumers in the world but they are devilishly savvy. If you dont bring a good game to town they will tell you to fark off. Rightly so. The other factor at play is the communication channels used to provide a compelling sporting context (i.e the euros are here to pull our pants down lets get behind our boys and tell em to get farked you ****s). Oh and dont try and sell a Melbournian a sporting event for 'free'. They will immediately dismiss it as a POS not worth seeing anyway. I agree with what you say about this; (give them a vibrant exciting environment with easy access to piss, some vague idea of a sporting event going on around them and prospects of getting a root). Track cycling - the Revolution series - is along these lines. Have you been to one? Remember we were crapping on ages ago about the German Six Day clips on youtube and you were like 'WTF, why can't I see something like this?' It's that sort of thing, fast paced program, name athletes and could appeal to someone who normally wouldn't be interested in cycling. Thanks god CI don't promote the track events at Vodophone now. Another year or two and it would have been dead. |
I could get this stickied in no time. Ive got the owner of this forum in my back pocket. I can do whatever I want on this forum and never get banned (again).
Isnt that right Brian ;) Ya *** boy. http://pages.nyu.edu/~mg1828/color/gimp.jpg |

I finally figured out why the TAN got so quiet. You're all here pissing in exy's pocket. How are ya ya mad seppo?
Only took me two days to read the *******. Thanks for the giggle. Hey Brian and Lotek, how about we make exy the moderator for the Canadian forum? Him and that other bloke'd have the sport whipped into shape in no time ;) |

Barely anyone in this country gives a fark about cycling as a sport. It's not necessarily a 'consumer' thing. Its not in the culture, which is why people won't stand on the side of a road and watch it. Froggies and Belgies grow up with it. We don't. End of farking story.
The strategy is this: **** the traditions of the sport to just get the little farkers to turn up. Worry about edumacating them later. First they come to a beat up trackie disco/piss up event, then we progress them to a twilight under lights inner city criterium event and the ultimate (the test match equivalent if you will) is a long one day classic road race.

We arent asking them to give a fark about the sport. You never start at that point. 74,000 will watch a game of 20/20 cricket in a few weeks time and more than half wont even care about the sport of cricket or play it competitively. They attend it as an event (for a myriad of reasons).

I've tried explaining cycling to a few non-cycling mates. They just don't get it. |
HORSES$%T!!!!!!!!!
You all had a bike as kids and dont try and tell me otherwise. You all loved that bike. Kids hang out on bikes, compare bikes, live for their bikes and the precious freedoms it affords. It took you everywhere. In fact the bike comes well before the cricket bat. What happens is that other sports market to children (read: they hire better baby eaters who use better communication channels) and create community based platforms upon which they can mind **** kiddies to lay down their bikes and ask for cricket bats. At the heart of everything is a national cycling federation with no cash in the bank. End of story. With money in the bank comes investment in grass roots, comes better marketing channels, comes bigger risk taking, comes better events and promotions, comes consolidation of the sport in the culture. WHICH brings me back to the national open road titles as an important money earner in the sport. |

Don't forget, how much does a cricket bat cost? What about a road bike, and how long is that going to last before your kid grows out of it and needs another one? |

Exactly. Its cultural. Like soccer in the UK, League in Sydney, NFL in the US. It just is. Everyone knows about it. Yes exy, everyone has a bike as a kid, but no Aussie kid pretends they are Robbie McEwen or Tom Boonen when they are out riding their bike, but they'll pretend to be James Hird when having a kick down the park or Adam Gilchirst when having a hit down the nets. In Belgium, every kid knows who Robbie McEwen or Tom Boonen are. That's the difference. |

She would have liked that bit IMO. It would have looked hot on video. |

Yes exy, everyone has a bike as a kid, but no kid in this country pretends they are Eddy Merckx or Jacques Anquetil when they are out riding their bike, but they'll pretend to be James Hird when having a kick down the park or Adam Gilchirst when having a hit down the nets. That's the difference. Hero worship is an "access to content" hurdle (for the sport). Sure it exists but we are so close to breaking down that barrier. This new generation is learning the internet extremely early. As a sport our financial barriers to entry into the prescious minds of 6,7,8 year olds is diminishing with increasing bandwidth. But first order of business is to cash up the national fed. |

I was living in colorado, seppo land during the late 80- early 90's and I think it was 91 when Lemond could not react to bugno and chiappucci on the hills. That was a turning point for me, witnessing the pain the diehard fans felt. Made me move back to oz. Then armstrong came along and internet bikeforums sites were invented anyway. |
Baby eater?
http://cache.viewimages.com/xc/12322...30FDCFC4C15FBB edit: you dickhead thats my pic I found it first. He looks classy on the bike (like I'd have a clue? lol). |

edit: you dickhead thats my pic I found it first. He looks classy on the bike (like I'd have a clue? lol). He's from Tashkent in the wilds of Uzbekistan. They eat babies out there, a bit like in the NT or north qld. He looked a little ungainly on the bike because he was short and squat, but looked impressive when he got the big gear going in the last 200m. Best sprinter in the world for a couple of years in the early 90's |
