Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Finally steppin into the 21st century: Fuji Team Issue WCS con Campagnolo

Once upon a time all I owned was vintage steel. Then, last winter I built up my Flyte SRS-3 as a daily rider, wet / fast ride bike. Built up with Campagnolo Centuar, Fulcrum wheels and a few other bits. It was a great build for those fast, and sometimes wet rides. I had always planned to upgrade the frame down the road. I thought maybe after the new year, after I reached my target weight again, but then of course this certain BikeForums member just happens to have a frame in my size that he wanted to move.

So the frame arrives today, and since I have the Flyte frameset is being sold shortly, what else was one to do but to build up the Fuji as soon as it arrived. No reason to have a group set and wheelset on one side of the room and a frameset on the other.

2006 Fuji Team Issue WCS

Fuji FC 440 full carbon fork

The Flyte starts getting stripped down.

Frame & Fork together with the Stem & Handlebar.

Derailleurs and Crankset on the Fuji

Ritchey Pro bars, WCS stem. I'll probably upgrade the bars to WCS (carbon?) down the road.

This is as far as I got tonight, well I got the chain on, and right now I've got the the black aluminum bottle cages from the Flyte on the frame. But not convinced they go too well with the frame.

I really think this frame needs white bar tape. However I know how quickly white starts looking, well, less than white. And if I get white tape, should I follow up with a white saddle? Poll added for the bar tape question. Left the saddle out of the question for simplicity.

And the finished setup:

All I've got to do is put the cyclometer back on before the ride Saturday.

But you can't fit (effective) fenders on that frame!

Don't worry, there's nothing wrong with giving other materials a try. You always have your steel for your serious riding, and for when this one splits in two.

Seriously, though, nice looking ride. Enjoy!

Oh, I'd vote for carbon tape.

Red and Black marble tape - there, I said it. Should stay looking somewhat clean for a while, and there is a good bit of red accents between the frame and wheels.

This coming from he who had the brand new white tape removed for black from his Team RC before it ever left the shop.

To be fair the saddle height isn't set properly yet. That post is a temp till my Ritchey carbon comes in. But yes, I am long in the leg and short in the torso. TheCahill is a coworker of mine who (used to ride and) will say flip it regardless of fit.

Geez you scared me Jon, for a moment there I thought you bought
Shimano. . .

I'd opt for one of the WC colours, maybe Yellow just to offset the darkness
of the frame and all those CF bits.

why is it the dark side?

considering your youth and occupation, it's about time you woke up and smelled the millennium.

now, about the bar tape - go black. black hoods and white bar tape doesn't work.

Oh, but I've already set the precedent with this one:

A. A white saddle must always accompany white tape.
B. I'm thinking black/black for that build. Just IMO.

I have white bar tape and a black seat...i like the seat...and honestly the only time anyone sees the color is when i am off the bike...at which point i will heckle the "owner" for the fashion mistake.

That is the deepest darkest of the dark side. Which one day I shall too join, but on a steel frame. Which I suppose makes a contradiction. But that's for another debate.

I'll probably go with black just because I already have a roll of black at home which means one less trip to the LBS. Considering what I spent last night for cables and the work installation (mostly the cables) that might be a good thing.

Sure you don't want a White San Marco Aspide from a Team RC? Only crashed once
