Turning off the HUBs? is it possible
Loud HUBs really aren't my thing.
click click click click click click click click click click click - *no thanks*
Is there a way to modify a hub to turn this ticking off?
One of my wheelsets randomly stopped ticking, and I've grown to enjoy the sound of a bike coasting without the clicks.

don't coast
aside from that there's not much you can do.
You could try pulling them apart and applying some heavier grease (on the prawls), but no guarantees on performance there.

haha u mean a quite freewheel body? not hubs! applying grease will need to be done regularly and is a pain... so if anytime you plan to upgrade your wheelset (the cheapest most efficient upgrade) have a look around stay clear of mavic though there really noisy

Out of interest, what IS the quietest freewheel body? On a factory wheelset that is.

Dura Ace hubs are pretty quiet, at least the 7800/7801 that were 10 speed only. I haven't ridden the "newer" 7850 which actually use the old 7700 hub design.

Shimano stuff always seems to be pretty quiet. I have a bike set-up with Open Pro/Ultegra wheels and the only time that I can hear the ratcheting is when I coast with a tailwind.
My Campagnolo stuff on the other hand, sounds like a bunch of bees buzzing, which is what I like.

Forte Titans have super quiet pawls. I'd prefer they be louder so I know if/when they are going to die (since the concensus on the forum is that they will in a year or two), but there's obviously someone out there who doesn't want to hear the machine he's on.

Nothing like cruising along in a big pack and hearing a King hub start buzzing. It's like the instant "follow me" sign.

I'm rocking an old school freewheel so I just drip some 10w-30 motor oil into it every now and then to quiet it down. @*(#!(@*&# LOUD RATCHETS
i seriously hate hearing ridiculously loud clicking in group rides. I don't know how hard (or easy) it is to lubricate a freehub, but it's really easy for freewheels so there is NO EXCUSE

My Shimano XT rear hub is so quiet that I thought it was defective when I first spun the wheel during building! It barely makes audible clicks in a quiet room, and even then, the clicks are nothing like the CLACK-CLACK-CLACKs you're probably used to, but rather a smooth sound, like "frfrfrfrfrfrfrfrfrfrfrfr". Outside, there's almost no discernable sound coming from it.

I personally don't mind the ticking sound.. What I don't like is the sound the tyres make on the road when the bike is moving. Sometimes if I ride on really smooth concrete the noise is minimal, but on normal road surfaces or gravel it really gets on my nerves. Any ideas on how I could fix this?
I am also not into the noise that birds make in the morning, it keeps me awake.

Making a kilometer blurry
Ultegra and D/A freehubs become nearly silent after a couple years of use. I was struck by how loud my PowerTap is when I'm wheeling it through the office -- but it doesn't hold a candle to the pounding of a Chris King freehub.

The Ultegra (WH-6600, I think) wheelset that came on my bike was almost completely silent. Especially compared to my GF's White Industries hubs. My Rolf's are thankfully at least audible, tho still nowhere near as loud as hers.
