Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The stem is a Specialized 90mm, which I'm going to be swapping out for an FSA OS-99 once my LBS gets it in.

I have a carbon Specialized headset cone with a small 2mm spacer under it, plus another 2mm spacer on top of the stem. (Note- I'm not actually sure if it's 2mm, just a guess.)

More thoughts on the bike:

Climbs amazingly well, so so much better than my old bike.

Handles sharp corners very well.

Descends very well.

I really love this bike.

I love the Ferrari stickers hehehe you read my mind man..

Actually I was out this weekend and got stoped twice. One was a OCP member I think and the other was a serious comuter. The OCP was on his obligatory Cervelo, and the comuter was on a Trek Madone 5.2, but had the rear view mirror on the helmet. Both were sort of at a loss for words, mainly saying nice bike and who makes it and wow... Of course I don't have SRAM red, and certainly not the way cool Zeros, but honestly with the Reynolds Solitudes, Speed Play Pedals, and SRAM Rival Grouppo I can't be more pleased. Of course when I tell em I did all this for less then 2K, that is usualy when you have to pick their jaws up off the floor.
Even for Neo's sexy build or others with higher end components we are still all getting out the door for a much more reasonable price.
For me the frame is very stable. It feels way better then I remember my aluminum schwinn feeling, and minus getting the rear derailur adjusted I am quite happy. I do agree with Frank though on the seat post. I have the PF seat back seat post and I feel like I need to just swap it out for a straight one. Even though I have the seat as far forward as allowable from the manufacturer I feel like I need another 3/4" to get my knee where I want it to be over the pedals.

Good stuff dsilver! Actually, the crazy thing is that not counting the Ksyrium ESs, I'm @ ~$2,300 even with the SRAM Red.

Not bad. I think I'll take mine out on a ride today potentially with a buddy who rides an MTB. I'll wait for him at the top of the hill. It'll be a task containing "Saturday Girl."

That's her name ..

Funny you mention this.
I have the exact same thoughts with my 53cm ZX3, even though the seat tube angle's supposed to be 74 degrees- (more than my other bikes at 73 degrees).
On my 2 other bikes, seat rails & post meet at about the middle of the rails.
The ZX3 necessitates seat jammed way forward (with the PF seat post).
Got me wondering at one point whether their seat tube angle measures were actually slacker than advertised and more intended for those with longer thighs...
Ordered a no set-back Thomson from LBS. Will see how it goes.

Please do let us knkow. I have a feeling it will fix the issue straight away. It isn't that I don't like the PF seat Post but wish they made a straight carbon one too..

How much setback does it have? I bough one but am going with an USE Alien (10mm setback instead). I agree that a post with 0 setback or very little setback would work best.

The weight of the PF post is a good bit more than adertised.

im using a thomson zero setback with the rails about as far back as they will go. this puts the nose of the saddle (fizik aliante) about 2cm behind the bottom bracket and puts me a little back from KOPS which I'm finding comfortable on this bike. Also using a short stem too which I may lengthen.

FWIW, rather than spring for a new seat post, I am violating the maximum allowable sliding position marking on my saddle .. if only by about 5 - 8 mm. It is enough in my case as my stem is already 10mm shorter than my other stems (in anticipation of this issue).

I did the same thing on 2 other bikes and have had no issues for years .. I think there is enough "cushion" in the recommendation that the risk is acceptable, if present.

But what is the risk, exactly? Do you risk damaging the seat tube or the seat post? I'm not really tall enough for that to be a problem, so I don't know for sure, but I always thought that this was more of an issue for the seat tube. If it were just a danger to the post, I'd think that it would be even more of an acceptable risk; if it breaks, get a new one because obviously you needed a new one in the first place. But in your case, we're talking like... 1/10th inch? Probably not a deal at all.

Ok here is a peek at the build...kinda a Jeckyl and hyde...this is not the weight weenie build (which should be just north of 13lb). Still some building to go...cables not cut, handlebar tape, chain etc.....waiting for PBK. The weenie build will have AC-350 wheels, supersonic tires and a KMC x10sl chain and a different stem!.

Will the weenie build be just for hill climbs? Supersonic tires get burned up really quick.

Nice build btw.

Yes, exclusively for climbs and/or races. They are on sale at PBK for $33 with free shipping otherwise I wouldn't have got them. I tend to be relatively easy on tires (maybe this means I don't ride enough ......no punctures last summer in >2000 miles of riding

Thanks, after seeing your pics I kinda regretted not getting the red one! but now that I've built up the black version I really like it...hell I'd like both a red and a black one

I'll try and post some better pics later, still some parts to add yet.

Sorry to hear that element. I am sure it wil get there soon.
That is quite the stealthy looking bike! I do like my red frame though. I thjink overall the frame is a solid and versitile platform. You can go weight wennie or not care as much and still get a great bike..
I need to go riding tomorrow and see how the shifting is on it. I made some tweaks but haven 't had a chance to go out.

I lied

I always have an idea of how big a box I need to look for when I walk into my building, I didn't see anything that looked big enough when I got home. Then I got told that there was a box for me \o/

55cm frame weighs: 2.27lb 1.030kg
FKR8 fork uncut: 0.79lb 0.360kg

These frames look gorgeous.

edit: No seatpost clamp and I've only got 31.8's in my parts bin. What size do I need?

the front der. is a 35 clamp, so I guess the seat tube needs that too.
