STI question
I tried a couple bikes with Sora shifters. On both bikes (Trek 1.2, Specialized Sequoia) it required quite a bit of torque to shift up chainrings. Is this true of all STI shifters, or Sora in particular? Thanks.

are you talking about the front or the back?
The rear shifter of my Ultegra SL group requires very little force to go up. The front is more work, but it shouldn't feel like you have to wrench on it to get it to go.

Probably just need to loosen up the high limit screw just a bit.

I've tuned probably 100's of Sora equipped bikes and that's not common.
Without seeing your bike my first 3 guesses would be: 1. shift cable connected to the derailleur wrong. 2. high limit screw set up too tight. 3. a burr in the cable housing or some other drag on the shift cable.

To answer your question - no it is not indicative of STI - or Shimano integrated shifting. That being said some users do occassionally complain about it being "difficult" to shift into a large chainring on a bike that is perfectly setup. When I have run into it and verified that everything is installed correctly and there are no problems then the only solution is to tell the rider to HTFU.
It seems as though you are test riding bikes? If so then test ride a nice rig. See how that feels and compare. If it is still "difficult" then a) the shop doesn't know how to install and adjust components or b) time to HTFU.
