Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What is the advasntage of bibs versus regular shorts? Looking at Assos Brand

HI, I have almost make my mind on buying an Assos cycling shorts / bibs, but am not sure to choose between plain shorts or bibs. I don't own bibs yet, but seems they are very popular in this GREAT forum. What is the main advantages / disadvantages of bibs over plain shorts? Assos offers the Nille in shorts AND bibs, but only the Unos and FI3 S2 on bibs. Are the bibs good for any ride? Can you wear the bibs without the tops ion place?

Thanks,

Francisco

bibs are a bit inconvenient when mother nature calls. Other than that, i prefer bib over short. no worry about showing the rear end. The pad on the Uno is thinner than Mile.

Generally...

Bibs
Pro's - No butt crack to show, No tight waistband, More comfortable
Con's - usually more expensive, possibly harder to get a good fit (if u are excessively heavy or small for your height), hard/akward to go to bathroom in

Shorts
Pro's - Easy to go to the bathroom in, cheaper
Cons - Tight waistband, Butt crack can hang out, less comfortable then bibs

go with bibs

no waistband, require much less re-adjustment on long rides.

There was once a thread with the definitive bibs vs. shorts survey. The results:

30% - never tried bibs
5% - tried bibs, prefer shorts
65% - tried bibs, now only wear bibs

It's ridiculous how much better bibs are and how once you try them you'll never go back. SO much better.

I bought one pair of shorts and that'll probably be the last ones I buy. Bibs fit better (given you don't carry a beer gut), never have to adjust while riding, and just feel better. I'm so spoiled with my bib, I get annoyed at my running shorts and their fit. Really not much else to it. Probably the only reason to go with shorts is the convenience factor.

Bibs fit even better than shorts on a beer gut... trust me.

Maybe we could get it stickied. Not that it would help people who don't even know how to use the search, but still.

They stay in place better, and have something of a girdling effect for those early-season-still-need-to-lose-20-lbs rides. Bought my first pair last summer, bought my second pair the day after. My shorts have been relegated to short rides and keeping my bike clothing drawer from getting too empty.

Never tried Assos clothing, but for the prices they ask the bibs better do some butt massaging while I'm riding.

I respectfully dissent. I've tried them all and use them all, including Assos bibs. They are a fine product, but I prefer shorts. If you do go with the Assos bibs, try them on first, they tend to run small.

If you have to pee (and are a guy) its no different than wearing shorts. (you dont have to take a shoulder strap down)

Yes, bibs rule! The only place I wear my shorts now would be on the trainer.

I'd add another personal con with bibs: on a hot day I seem to get a whole lot more sweaty wearing them, and the sweat tends to run down and collect in my nether regions. Having said that, I ride bibs probably 90% of the time, 100% of the time outside summer.
