Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Dramamine - any effects?

Anyone know if dramamine has any negative effects on riding or endurance activities (other than sleepiness if you take the regular stuff)?

I'm taking Wed-Friday off work to road trip with a friend to the Asheville, NC area (12 hr drive) and figure I can get some work time in on the laptop if I'm not driving as long as it won't spoil the riding...

I've had surprisingly good luck with motion sickness wristbands. They have no side effects except you look like a fool.

It may have been placebo effect, but they worked for me (for sea sickness from sailing, not from riding reading while riding.)

Thanks for the additional option - I'll have to check the drug store before I leave. If not it looks like non-drowsy dramamine...

Even the non-drowsy stuff knocks me out. I can ride just fine, but it's always an early night.

Go with" Bonine" this works the best for me I use it for open water scuba dives. It comes in a chewable once a day tablet works great and virtually no side effects.

I'll second the bonine. You're gonna need all of the energy you can muster just to get up Jeff's cousin's driveway.

(seriously ... the bonine works)

from someone who deals with motion sickness on a regular basis... (see avatar)...

Dramamine's purpose is solely to dull your bodies senses so that you don't realize the motion.

Easiest way to keep from getting sick is to simply pay attention to the horizon occasionally and mentally orient yourself. Think of yourself etc.

Also... mythbusters did a show on this and I think they determined that something completely odd actually worked best and that the dramamine worked 2nd best...

No idea of athletic side effects tho. I obv can't take any when Im flying.

That stuff makes it almost impossible for me to stay awake or stand up. I'd never take it and ride a bike.
