Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Tell her you are thinking of taking up golf and give her this financial breakdown. Compare the activities and they will love the fact that you are riding your bike..

A full round normally is 4 hours, with driving to course, warming up, lunch after you are looking at 5 to 6 hours minimum in time spent.. You can get a great workout in riding you bike in 1 to 3 hours.

Golf really does cost a lot more than people think, an avid golfer that play 3 rounds a week.

40.00 for green fees per round
10.00 Lunch or Beverages per round
10.00 Sleeve of Premium Balls

So playing 3 rounds per week, not counting range balls, gloves - bag - new clubs will cost about $9000.00 per year.. If you count practice balls, clubs etc, this could be as much at $11,000-12,000 per year..

I have a couple bikes that are going on 10 years old that I still ride.. I do not have any golf clubs that are more than a couple of years old..

Waiting for Dr. Phil or maybe Jerry Springer to post something.

Broken spoke! Sounds like reason enough to upgrade to the next level of drivetrain, new riding kit and matching shoes & helmet.

My wife thinks cycling is way too expensive but a much better trade off to when I was a drunk.

Pay much more high quality attention to her and the bikes and bits will become much less expensive. One day you will be walking out of the shop and she will say, "Don't you like it? Why not just buy it?"

It happens.

Sometimes she points at my bottom-of-the-range Allez and says "Since you ride so much, it's good to spend money on such an expensive bike."
