Looking for a road stem with some "style"

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

KendallF, that stem is beautiful! Is the front hinged? How long is the one that you pictured?

It opens just enough to slide a bar through without scratching it..doesn't come open all the way. That one's a 140.

Cinelli X/A stems are rubbish. They are notorious for slipping and you will generally only find them in the 26.4mm diameter. And 3t Mutants are totally fugly. As KendallF said the 3t Evolutions are nice, with the hinged front. Avoid 3t Morphus though, they are dangerous and useless. ITM eclypse are a nice looking stem, as are Cinelli Pinnochio.

For style, you need to go Italian. 3T, ITM and Cinelli make (made?) really nice quill stems. I had a great ITM on my last threaded fork frame:

For threadless, I like the Cinelli groove, which I use now.

though the ITM 101 is really nice too.

I kind of like the Mutant...

I'll just have to live in shame.

Those Cinelli Grooves are nice.

Nitto quills are understated and very nicely done.

"I kind of like the Mutant..."

Although it's not my ideal, I couldn't find anything else that was highly polished and somewhat retro. I am not partial to all this fat blackness on bikes these days. Give me skinny, shiny, color.
