Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Looking for a road stem with some "style"

I have a 1994 Litespeed Catalyst frame and threaded carbon fork on the way. The Catalyst uses smaller OD tubes and has a bit of a classic road bike look to it. While I will be using modern components, I want to preserve some of that classic look.

What stem would you suggest? Pics appreciated.

I could go with a quill, even though they are kind of a pita. What is a good source for quills?

Or, I could install the threadless adapter and go 1 1/8. What do you consider to be the best looking threadless stems?

Are there other options?

Thanks as always, RFC

For my money, these two are great. Esp. for a bike from your era, and with a narrower headtube. But, no 31.7. For that: Deda?

I love the look of a Nitto Technomics Deluxe.

Btw, you could also troll ebay for Ti stems.

+1 on the 3T Mutant. There's a seller on eBay with quite a selection of size and color. They do look a bit "phallicy" though when you hold them in your hand.

Yes, I agree that the Mutant is one of the coolest stems on this planet, if you can find one, quilled.

If you decide to go with the Nitto Technomic Deluxe(tall) or Nitto Technomic(even taller), make sure your head tube is long enough to get your handlebar as low as you'd like. I have the Deluxe on my old Bridgestone RB, and it's a pretty stem, but I need to cut some of it off to get my handlebar where I really want it.

The Alter's a wicked-looking stem but, it only fit's 1" steer tubes

As an alternative, the Cinelli Groove's a pretty cool looker too, and it beat out the Mutant for my bike

I love quill stems. I prefer them over threadless stems. I find them superior in both form and function.

If you want classic though, you might want to keep your stem sleek and simple. Afterall, not every single component on your bike needs to scream.

I think any of the stems on this page will do just fine:
