Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Please help me pick pump... : )

Hey everyone!

I'm currently looking to purchase a new floor pump and am trying to decide between

1) Topeak's Joe Blow Sprint Floor Pump (~$35)
https://www.nashbar.com/profile.cfm?c...0Floor%20Pumps

or

2) Planet Bike's 1002-3 ALX Floor Pump with Love Handle (~25)
https://www.amazon.com/Planet-Bike-10...7983152&sr=8-2

I've read great reviews about the Joe Blow Sprint (and Pro) on various websites, but it seems that the only reviews that I could find on Planet Bike's pump is on Amazon.

So basically my question(s) is as follows:

Has anyone used the Planet Bike floor pump? If so, what are your thoughts on it. Furthermore, which pump would you guys recommend I get and why. The main factors I'm looking for are reliability, customer service/warranty, cost (sub $50), and quality/ease of use.

I'm also open to other suggestions.

Thanks again everyone

I've been using the (red) steel barrel Planet Bike pump (even cheaper than the ALX) for the past few years w/o any issue...of course I only use it once or twice a week.

I use a Joe Blow Sport (usually ~25), works great. Pumps up my tire in under 30 seconds to 110psi.

What the heck is a love handle?

I have the JoeBlow Sprint with the dual head. Both clamp perfectly and it pumps up to 125psi every time no problem.

Before that I had a Nashbar that had a broken gauge and had a crappy head, and a Specialized that wouldn't pump presta valves. The Joe Blow series is tops, go for it. Even the 'bottom of the line' Sport model is solid.

Do yourself a favor and skip the $25 pump specials. My first pump was a $25 special and it leaked air at the head after 3 months making it garbage. Joe Blow Pro has a nice, solid, metal head. Don't know about the sprint, but Joe Blow is supposed to be pretty good. You can probably get the Pro for around $60.

Joe Blow Pro! Topeak is a great company. If something breaks, they will send you a replacement no problem.

I recommend highly a carbon fiber floor pump. They're only 80 dollars...

I replaced my AirTower1 with the JB SPrint. The Blackburn was nice..nothing wrong with it, but the Topeak has a much better seal and is more efficient...worth the extra doll hairs.

Topeak really stands behind their products, and I like their products. I have an old Zefal Husky whose hose sprung a leak and whose presta head wore out. I replaced the hose and pump head with the Topeak Smarthead kit and the pump has a new lease on life. The pumphead is actually superior to the old one in functionality. I have other Topeak pumps (frame pumps) and when one of the heads broke they sent a new one out right away.

Same here. works great and I got mine on the tuesday lunch hour deals at performance for an extra 10% off of an already sale price. Walked out the door for around 19 bucks including taxes. Has worked well with daily usage for the last 7 months or so.

Blackburn trackpump 1

Buy it at your LBS, lifetime warranty. Mine broke recently and i just went in there and swapped it out with one off the floor....shop will warranty the old one and use it to restock the one they gave me.

Topeak also makes the best frame pump, I think. They make a pump called a Road Morph. It works like a small floor pump and has a gauge. It is easy to get to 120 lbs with it. If you need a pump to take on a bike, the Road Morph is a great one.

I'm definately the minority opinion but I didn't have good luck with Joe Blow. I had two (I keep one of my weekend riding place) and the other at home. Each lasted three years. I've had just about everything but I found the mid range Specialized the best. It's only $35 as well.
