Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Clothes for smaller guys

Ok, so I know there are others of you guys out there like me. At 5'9 I'm "average" height, with a 140lbs "slight" build, and have a hard time finding clothes that fit. Small shirts are almost always too long and too wide. I need size 28 shorts and pants, but most only go down to 30 and even then they can be hard to find in stores. So where do people like us shop? Where have you found clothes that fit well? Anyone resort to the kids departments? I've found a few places but I want to heard from you guys first.

I'm your height and a few pounds less.
I'm looking for the answer myself.
American Apparel has T-shirts that fit well, but I haven't found much in the way of office attire.

I feel your pain. 5' 10" and 138 lbs. In terms of cycling clothes...for jersey's I look for a European fit, smalls in any other style are just way too 'baggy'

Regarding my 'civilian' clothes: I own 8 pairs of jeans...all of which are too big on me. I've always balked at guys spending $200 for a pair of tailored jeans...only to realize I've spent well over twice that much on mid-priced jeans that I never wear. Go with tailored clothes.

Ok, that's all I'll contribute to this metrosexual thread

I'm 5'7", 130lbs with a 29" waist. For jeans, I often go to outlet stores (like CK) since you have a better chance of finding something smaller (they just have a larger selection). But yeah, you need to be patient and forget about buying stuff on sale or buying clothes from places like Costco.

Bikes: A lot.

I'm 5'10, 150lbs, with a pretty small upper body. For dress pants, Gap has some nicely cut pants that don't look like parachute pants.

For Jeans, I go with Levis 527's, and recently AE's Slim low rise boot cut jeans. The problem is I am a 30 waist, 30-32 leg depending on brands, were a 31 would fit me the best, but no one sells 31" legs

For t-shirts, I have to go with XS from both gap and AE. Target's house stylish brand (Mu-somthing) smalls used to fit me great, but last year, there S magicly got bigger, and now they look pretty baggy (in most case)

For dressshirts, Gap has Premium fit shirts that are a more taylored/thinner cut shirts that fit me nicely in size small. At AE, I can get away with wearing their XS dress shirts. I don't know if they still have it, but last year at Steve and Barries, I bought a few dress shirts that are made of a stretchy material (I think they are 2% spandex) that are cut great, and they were sub $10. I've actually had alot of compliments on those shirts. However last time I went in, I couldn't find any more cut like that.

Yeah, to clarify I mean "regular" clothes, not cycling clothes. I'm pretty much 28-30 on pants but I can do 30-30. I hardly ever wear pants though, and fortunately my work has rather casual standards.

As funny as this may sound, have you tried the juniors section for shorts and t-shirts? After being given several youth large t-shirts from middle schools I visited, I realized that they actually fit me just fine (5'11" 150 lb btw). I'm also quite sure you could find some shorts at JC Penny or Old Navy meant for teens. As for jeans, I know they make 28s but it's hard to find jeans with an inseam longer than the waist here in overweight America. In that case, you can order the jeans from JC Penny catalog and try them on in the store before you take them home.

Bikes: Colnago CT-1 B-stay Campy Carbon Record, '05 Litespeed Siena Campy, Bridgestone X03 , Peugeot dream bike gets FIXED, Waterford Campy Record Colbalto, Motobecane Tandem in perfect condition, A Belgium made Bertin that was sent by an angel

My son is 11, he's a 26.
the BF is not but he's only a 28.
Surf shops have waist sizes starting at 26 usually.
I can take them both there and they can get their fill of plaid shorts and hipster clothes.

Pretty soon the BF will get hand-me-downs from the kid.

TJ Maxx/marshall's have pretty cool/good quality clothes in the boys dept. There you can wear a 16 or 18. and you'll dig the prices.

5'11 150-155lb.

jeans from Diesel and Seven fit me good -size 30. Recently have been getting a lot of my shirts from H&M -they are cheap and a small t-shirt fits perfect. For sports clothes- like cavs shirts which always run huge I can get away with going to the kids L/XL section.

I'm 5'8 130lb... so I should be pretty similar to you in size... small shirts usually fit fine for me... try finding the ones with smaller cuts for H&M/Walmart/Hollister, etc. Actually, those tight compression shirts from Walmart are actually too small with S, I have to wear medium there.

And for bike shorts, PBK usually carries those smaller sizes... 22-24 24-26 26-28... ?

I'm too cheap for jerseys so I wouldn't know where to find those.

Buy clothes from Asian designers. All of my dress shirts come from Hong Kong/China/Japan, where people are generally more slender and have tapered torsos.

Bikes: Light.

Spindly climber dudes like me have to get by on post-shrunk cotton t-shirts and the left over Small and Medium volunteer shirts from races.

I try not to wear pants whenever possible, as I only have a few pairs that won't end up around my knees without a belt.

Fitted shirts in size small are about the only thing that fits on my 5-9, 142# 31" waisted body. I've found that Claiborne, Express Men, Banana Republic, sometimes Gap/Old Navy if you get lucky, fit well. I'm sure CK would too, but the others are easier to get to. I have a tough time finding pants though, as most have fairly wide legs and look ridiculous on skinny people. Easy fit doesn't work, pleats don't work. If I find a flat front, tapered leg pair of pants, I give it serious consideration as I have no idea when I'll find my next pair.

Tour + Olympics + Anxiety from(heated general election + Russian invasion), is my guess.

Ok, so now that I've gotten some good responses... I have looked at kid's department clothes but generally don't like their styles as much. I get most of my clothes from the "young men's" department of Macy's, or surf & skate type shops like PacSun.

I recently nabbed some XS t-shirts at Express that were on sale, and my favorite shorts are a few pairs of "Fox" cargo-style shorts, size 28. I recently found some new "Matrix" shorts at Macy's that I like. I actually like Macy's a lot, as long as I stick to certain brands. CK, DKNY, INC, and Material London tend to be more slender/fitted. Claiborne, Alfani, etc. tend to be huge.

When I shop at Macy's I almost always buy off the discount racks; 50% off of 50% off type stuff, where a nice shirt usually end up costing $10-$15. I've had a harder time getting shorts at discount, and usually end up paying $50 or so, but don't need very many and don't buy them often. My favorite pair of pants are Ben Sherman, in size 28, with a built-in belt thingie to cinch them up. When I had to get a suit, I managed to one from Men's Wearhouse tailored to be acceptable.

As for bike clothes, small race-cut jerseys and medium bibs from Voler fit me well. Small bibs feel like they fit better but the legs wear out faster. And I got a small skinsuit.

I am 5'9.5" and 145 lb. The youth XL golf shirts from Brooks Brothers fit very well. They can be had for pretty cheap when they are doing a good sale - best I have gotten was 3 for $80 last summer.

As mentioned before, the Gap does a pretty good job with smaller clothes, as does J Crew.

Yes, I am preppy.
