Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Looks pretty stable, but I think you'll have trouble on hills. Also, the aerodynamics aren't the best...

Personally, I'm a big-wheel chauvinist. You'll never get a decent high gear with those puny wheels. Looks comfy, though.

Do most recumbents come with a bed pan?

Just getting ready for the not so distant future where I'll be a fat, leaky bladdered, diaper wearing, flag flying,
grey bearded, aero bellied, sandal wearing, impotent recumbulator...

Here is John Schlitter, the first solo bent rider to finish RAAM. He did it in about the same time as David Jones, a 61 year old member of my road bike club. Oddly, they both had low speed crashes near the end due to falling asleep on the bike.

Here is a link for full results for RAAM 2008:

https://stats.raceacrossamerica.org/2.../overview.html

For a 61 year old, pedaling 3014 miles in 11 days and changes is rather impresive.

RAAM has been called the world's toughest bike race.

It's been called the world's toughest endurance race.

Finally, it was voted by Outside magazine as the world's toughest sporting event.

As well as this year being the first recumbent rider to tackle & complete it solo, last year John Schlitter was a member
of a 2-man recumbent team that beat all the other two-man teams to the finish line bar one.

3000 miles of road and 108,000 feet of climbing & plenty of sleep deprivation.

Unlike the Tour De France which has the riders completing a set distance each day, allowing plenty of rest & sleep to be ready
for the next days riding, when RAAM starts, the clock keeps running until the competitors reach the other side of the country.

Which, coincidentally, makes the Tour de France actually worth watching.

OK now we have come full circle in this thread, back to the OP: If you see a bent rider wobbling down the MUP, he's not wobbling because he's a fat, bearded guy in sandals...he could just be sleep deprived because he is practicing for RAAM! Yeah, that's the ticket!

This does give me a million dollar idea though. I need to create an auto-pilot system for bents.
I mean, what good is riding a hammock if you can't take a nap?
(I'll be sure to include that bed pan too...thanks for the design tip!)

I see your piddly little RAAM and give you Mark Beaumont, who recently broke the record for riding around the globe on a bike. Done on a DF unsurported, natch.

Rather worringly though, he appears to have a beard in some of the pictures. Although I might let him off after 195 days in the saddle

no support. Checkpoints only. You start. Either you finish, die or end up in the hospital.

You said bike race:

Only a handful ever finish.

Shocking part is the 61 year old pedalled across US continent in 11 days and change.. likley better time than you on a regular road bike (and at what age?) on a similar distance ride; un-shockingly, your ignorant self failed to comprehend the concept... at least show some respect.

Might I suggest the recumbent as the location for the nap? I hear they are just as comfortable as a couch.

just want to add...there is no entry fee...no prize except astronaut icecream for the finishers. If you get support on the route...DQ, if you use a cellphone DQ, if you have someone bring something to you on the route DQ, if your bike failss, you can: quit, drag it to the next check point or get a ride BACKWARDS on the course to a town.

So unlike RAAM, you have no support. You can't get help. NO DRAFTING ALLOWED.

No freaking bents.

I think 4-5 people finished it this year with several going to the hospital.

One guy said he left his tent out on the course which he got sick and puked in so the EMOs could find out what death really smelled like.

The 61 year old guy has completed the RAAM twice. His first try he dnf'd when a tornado forced him to seek shelter in a hospital, where it was discovered that he was suffering from hyponatremia and had gained 15 pounds, (he's a small guy).
