Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What ride are you 8 hours in the saddle for? Some of my friends just completed a 24 hour ride on DF bikes. No complaints other than sore legs.

I mean jeez....with all the talk of the speed of a bent....8 hours on a bike would be like 300 miles wouldn't it?

Funny how I hear about how fast bent riders are....I look at a bike journal entry of a bent rider and he's bragging about passing DF riders and smoking people all the time. I look at his AVERAGE speed and it's always around 14mph.

Yea, kinda like when a bullie picks on the wrong person...This thread was and has been about bashing bents. So a few took exception. Not exacly the same. So unless you want to cite a few examples I'd say your just...actually, I dont see the point. You will probably keep the same attitude. I have no problem with DF bikes (ride 2 myself) or thier riders but appearantly bents bother some. That's fine, no rules on what we have to like or dislike. BTW the forum I read most is BROL and while there are a few comments ocasionally about how bad DF's are that person is quickly informed that the site is not about bashing otheres choice of ride. I'ts ok to discuss the differences but slamming is not part of the game.

The slamming was more along the lines that bents are not real bikes and thier riders are old, crippled and cant ride without wobbleing etc...BTW I'm 46 and no physical problems with either ride choice, I just like my bent better. However, if a bent allowes someone to ride who otherwise couldn't I'm all for it. Then I hear how bent riders act all superior when in fact that is not true at all. Still looking for those examples I asked for 2 post earlier...

I'm all for exercise in whatever form it is. I don't like bents who think they are faster than uprights when 99% of the time the upright rider is probably in better physical shape.

Go find the proof for yourself. It's funny as hell when a bent guy talks about dropping a cat 1-3 racer.

Don't forget beards....we strive for accuracy in our slamming and stereotypes 'round these parts.

Just to make sure I understand our cycling options, this means that we all are:

1) Gay Type A exhibitionists clad in lycra
2) Santa Claus lookalikes in sandals tooling about at 8mph
3) Freds

If so, I choose #3

so put the guy in better physical shape on a bent and he will pass himself...until he hits a major hill that is. As for those bragging about dropping a racer, some can, most can't. On one of the most recent bent threads I read, one guy was complaining about being passed by a jogger...see post #8

https://www.bikeforums.net/recumbent/450627-i-m-still-too-slow.html

Oh and notice there is no DF bashing. The OP says he will ride his DF with fenders in the rain the next day. Others say it is the motor, not the machine. But regardless, there will always be those who like to stroke thier own ego. Some true and some just dreaming....

I do this ride in more than 11 hours in the saddle.

Your friends were riding 24 hour non-stop or relays? I'd bet you they couldn't ride 8 hours non-stop without pain in the rear.

Incorrect. I've done 8 hour rides where my legs were fried but my ass was fine. I get more discomfort sitting in a car for 2 hours than I do on a bike for 8.

Also my experience. BTW, despite being a bent rider, I find my racing bike to be more comfortable if I'm going to be riding all day. Maybe I have it adjusted better, but I suspect that it's more likely because I can use a greater variety of positions.

Ah.. I didn't say anything about riding for 8 hours.. I clearly stated sitting for 8 hours on a saddle. You're incorrect.

Does not compute. 8 hour ride, 8 hours in the saddle. But I've done double centuries with 10-12 hours of riding time, so even if you account for out of the saddle time (e.g. climbing), it is still more than 8 hours in the saddle. I don't see your point.

I cry foul young man, your misrepresenting. That was actually me. I wasnt complaining, and it doesnt say i was, just pointing it out because it was amusing.

It wouldnt have mattered whether i was on a bent or not as i'm not a particularly strong cyclist - need more practice . The fact is i rather like cycling slowly and taking in the scenery. At the time i was going over one of the bridges that cross the thames and enjoying the view of the river

24 hours. They are ultra cyclists. I think it was either a 5 or 6 man team and 4 of them had to finish together.

For most of them, a double century is a good warmup.

may I suggest a trike for the ultimate in slow? No need to even worry about the wobble.

You try riding a trike in London rush hour traffic and see how long you last
