Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Northland Bicycle and Fitness

Columbus, Ohio

Small place, but good inventory for its size. Been around for 40+ years. Family owned. Very knowledgable staff. For small repairs such as adjustments and things, they usually don't charge anything. Though, like I said, it's small. But you can't help but like it. They carry neither trek nor specialized though. Gonna have to check out a big shop on the east side for that.

Roy's Sheepshead Cycles 2679 Coney Island Ave Brooklyn

These guys are the best! I had this crank noise that sent me all over looking for a solution. I went first to Gotham, then Sid's (they will be #2), and to that place near Sutton place. A lot of chin scratching was going on, much speculation ... and of course I would need to leave my bike while they carefully evaluated the situation. I remember Roy's in Sheepshead Bay and that I'd had good experiences there. Don't know what happened to my memory! These guys - most of them from them Caribbean just grabbed my bike, stripped it down, greased it up, put it back together, then gave it a good wash, all in under 20 minutes and for 30 bucks. I felt like I was riding a new bike home! I have been back since and the experience is always the same - quick and super proficient service, for close to nothing. Last time I had broken my wrench trying to get an over-tight cassette lockring off. I took it to the mechanics at Roy's and they got it off, put in a new cassette, installed the chain, did it in about 10 minutes and charged me $10. I said to the guy, 'I have to get myself better tools!' Na, he said, 'just take it to me. You know, that is a solution! S H I T, I sound like a Bikesdirect type shill, but I am really impressed w/t this place.

# 2 Sid's. Cool shop!

This has definitely not been my experience. The lower-level staff seem friendly enough, but on two separate occasions I've talked with the supposedly experienced people only to get totally bogus advice. One "experienced" employee told me that there's no way I will ever get my SRAM Rival shifter correctly tuned to shift my Ultegra front derailleur. Hmmmm- I've been riding with perfect shifting for a few thousand miles now... WITHOUT their help!

Shop name: Bicycle Trip

Shop Location: Santa Cruz, CA

Comments: This has to be the friendliest shop I've ever been to. They give all sorts of free maintenance and advice on bikes I didn't even buy from them. They have a decent selection of Giant, Redline and Gary Fisher bikes. They have a decent selection of parts and clothes. Really their strength lies in the friendly, attentive and fast customer service.

Shop name: Sprockets

Shop location: Santa Cruz, CA

Comments: I'm not just listing them because their my team sponsor. This is a family-owned shop and the two owners are very nice. They've got a lot of great Trek and Masi bikes and attentive customer service. A lot of the shops in the area will ignore you if you don't look preppy enough but they treat you right. They've got a good selection of parts, shoes and clothes available.

I could list several shops that I don't like as much as these, but it would not be in the spirit of this thread

The Bicycle Trip and Sprockets are my two favorite bike shops in the Santa Cruz area. Nobody else even comes close to matching their level of service and friendliness.

^^^ Zinn, I've been away from the Cruz for too long. The Trip is still there? Nice!

Colorado Springs, Colorado

Every time I've needed something like repairs above my skill level, or advice on something I can get somewhere else a smidge cheaper, they've always come through. Good at rush service, and super friendly staff. Nice lookin' store, too.

Maybe this should be listed as the best bike shop you'll likely never visit. Near where I live (Luxembourg) is a town named Bertrange. Cycling.lu (name of shop and name of website) is located there. Tom Flammang is a former Pro Tour rider who now owns this place and rides cyclo and road for local teams as a hobby. Great guy and really loves cycling - just this past Spring I was telling him about my trip up to watch Paris-Roubaix and he slips in "I love that race - finished top 20 once".

His partner (business) is Atti Porrini - another great guy and a great wrench. European shops tend to run expensive, but the prices here are reasonable (Euro standards and not for USD paying customers).

But they guys are fantastic - type of shop you go to in order to hang out and have a coffee while they are setting up a team's cyclo rigs or gluing tires. And really good coffee too!

+1000
Been going to Roy's for 6 years now.. bought 4 race bikes for me, 2 for my sons and numerous kids/family bikes from them... their service has been great, they have always matched legitimate prices, or just gave me the right price... and they special order for me.. and for a good fitting I let Alan of Roy's set me up... no complaints at all with the fittings..

I could not disagree more with Marty's. They have never been at all helpful with me, ignoring me completely most time when I have gone there. I have had several friends work there during summers and they will all agree that it is a poorly managed shop. That said, I have bought two bikes there (before I knew better).

I actually went to Montclair Bikery after becoming so livid at both the Randolph and Morristown Marty's locations. They were truly helpful and gave me a great deal on my newest bike. It was a wonderful experience buying from them. I'll be heading back there next week for my 6 month tune up and figure it is completely worth the drive from Randolph. Two big thumbs up for Montclair Bikery!

Everyone there is very knowledgable and friendly. They have good deals on service and parts, not to mention they do a great job of fittings. Seems to be a bike shop destination for many in the city.

I'll have to second the West Hill Shop in Putney VT. I got my first "nice" bike there about a month ago and couldn't be happier. They are friendly, down-to-earth folks who will happily strike up a conversation, and explain things to newbies. The prices are a little high, but not unreasonable, especially considering it's a single store.

Favorite bike shop

Rage Cycles Scottsdale, Arizona Everytime I go into this shop, I wonder why I ever buy anything anywhere else. The interior is very rustic looking and all of their products are displayed thoughtfully. Great bunch of people.

Dave Letourneau runs a one-man shop. He's a former machinist and an excellent wrench, and he's happy to teach you anything about wrenching. He races road, mtn, and cross. He's a great guy and always drops whatever he's doing when you walk in or call. And he builds an awesome wheel.

Comments:

I bought my first road bike from them, as well as bikes for both of my kids and most of my cycling gear. Their staff is helpful and knowledgeable, their mechanics are excellent and very honest (I had a problem with my rear brake which I let go way too long and thought I needed new pads on the front, brought the bike in for a tune-up and told them I thought I needed new pads, they initially agreed but chose not to replace the pads because once they cleaned the gunk off of them it turned out there was still plenty of life in them). Anyway, an all-around great bunch of people in my opinion. The Parsippany store has a particularly good selection.

Shop name: Rasmussen Bike Shop

Shop location: West Des Moines, IA

Comments: This is the best bike shop in the Des Moines area. A place run by racers and recreational riders alike, where both can feel comfortable and hang out. No high pressure sales tactics, but very knowledgeable sales people. They support the riding scene by sponsoring a racing team, many races and lots of bike advocate groups. They also sponsor a newly formed womens racing team(Punk Rock Cycling). Stop by and see them if you're ever in town. They will greet you with a smile, especially if you bring a beer or two.

Shop Name: Cycle to Fitness

Shop Location: Livonia, MI

Comments: I started racing with it only because it is such a cool bike shop. The owner is great and will speak with you about anything, especially bikes. The owner is a racer as well as a sponsor (Cycle to Fitness Greyhounds) for a tri team, a mountian bike team, and a road team. But, it's not like the teams are seperate either. You can sign up for one and try your hand at any of them. Great support at the races and sponsors. Many, many rides throughout the week are run from the shop and it's too conviently close to Hines drive to not take advantange of the rides. Very generous and a hell of a guy. What more could you want?
