Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Wing Bar

What is the difference between a "Wing" handle bar and a non-wing bar?

Wing bars have an ovalized top section which fits in your palm better than a round bar.

Allegedly.

I think wing bars tend to benefit people with large hands more so than those with small hands.

They're really comfortable, but a little more expensive than typical 'round' ones.

Like a seat, it's something you'll want to try out before you spend money. You have regular round, oversized round and wing. My hands aren't really big and I don't like wing bars. Give me an OS bar or standard bar with thick tape and I'm a happy camper.

My hands are larger than most, but the Deda Belgian Deep Drop (215 and Newton) bars work better for me than wing shaped bars do.

No one makes a wing shaped bar with a round, deep drop. They are all that anatomic crap.

I have Wing Pro compact bars on all of my bikes. I don't think my hands are large and they work much better for me than any round bar that I've tried.

The FSA Wing Pro Compact that I have don't have an anatomic drop. I know that previous models did, but the ones I have now don't. I don't care for the anatomic crap either.

Bikes: Lots. Chapter2, Van Dessel, Giant, Trek, etc Dealers for BMC, Chapter2

The three main rider to bicycle contact points are subject to deeply personal preferences. These include:

Saddle
Shorts
Pedal
Shoes
Bars
Gloves

That means that the advice received, while sometimes very good, can never replace feeling it out for yourself in person.

But it's a compact.

I'm afraid my hands won't even fit on a round, short, shallow drop bar.

The Deda's are freaking deep. It feels like you fall into them when you move your hands from the tops or hoods to the drops.

But I'm a girl...I like the compact! I guess you're right, I just looked at the Wing Pro's that George put on his bike yesterday and they have the anatomic crap.

Hmm...a Parlee and chants of "deeper".

Are we still talking about bikes or did this turn into a poorly veiled sex thread...with carbon toys?

Fine:

Campagnolo Chorus with a Record Full Titanium Cassette, Deda Newton Belgian Deep Drop bars with a Deda Zero 100 stem.

Lightweight Ventoux wheels, Continental GP4000 tubular tires.

The Pinarello M.O.st branded seatpost and Selle San Marco saddle have been replaced by an AX-Lightness Europa seatpost and a Tune Concorde saddle. There are no more spacers, either.

14.3 pounds with bottle cage and Speedplay Zero Titanium pedals.

Also: I don't have the bike anymore, just the wheels.

I don't do carbon very often. The Parlee Z4 was bought on impluse and was my first frame that had any carbon used in its construction.

In chronological order: 2001 Cannondale CAAD 4 Aero, 2004 Bianchi XL EV3, 2004 Bianchi XL EV4, 2002 Cannondale CAAD 6 SI and a 2000 Coppi Aluminum.

If the Parlee was a 53cm instead of a 55cm, I would still have it.
