Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

SC's are way overhyped. Nothing Scotty has ever produced was anything original. I still can't figure out why anyone would pay the prices SC's command for a mediocre putter.

Now the Thomson seat post, I have 5 of them on 4 bikes.

I don't know how it's possible, but I haven't touched my Elite post on my mountain bike since I put it on...and it's been 7 or so years.

I have a Masterpiece. Lighter than the carbon OEM post it replaced, looks nice too. Hope I can manage to stop it squeaking some time soon.

I think there is plenty of bling with a thomson post...it shows that you know your stuff. I have a thomson stem on the cross bike...stiff. many of the lightweight stems are too flexy for me. the older stem design does not have exposed bolt heads at the back so my knee does not have something to bang into.

Thomson is a company that machines satellites and aerospace parts in the daytime, then let some of the more enthusiastic engineers 'borrow' the fabs at night to make bike stuff for fun. It's like getting Wernher Von Braun (sans fascist baggage) to design your bike.

The design is pure 'form follows function' in a way that makes the utilitarian beautiful. Err, ignore the setback seatpost.

C'mon.

I have ridden both carbon and aluminum seatposts alike, one one bike negligible benefit. On another, HUGE. I thought it was a marketing ploy, yes, but with the right setup and riding style a carbon seatpost really provides a tangible benefit. A benefit in performance, feel and comfort.

Why no love for the setback post? Am I the only one who rocks it proudly?

A suggestion....take the post out, coat it with Phil Woods grease, rub the grease in, then wipe it off with a towel. Put the post in your downtube. Remove, repeat, and then set it to the proper height. You should do this about every month or two, depending on how much you sweat or if you ride in the rain.

That worked! Many thanks. I had been using carbon prep paste (it's in a carbon frame) but the slightly gritty texture must have been causing the creaking.

Setback btw.
