Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I confess, I was not a RyanF believer, either. OK, I've been convinced. Bunker Hill, huh? Is that the one NE of Central Lake, between Rushton and Knipe? Some nice hills anywhere between Central Lake and Boyne City. DALMAC avoided Kidder Rd this year because (I think) of paving issues.

Hilly Hundred isn't in Michigan, it's in S. Indiana.

Yes to the bunker hill location. Dalmac should have done kidder they fixed the road and that is another nice climb from any direction.

The ride I was originally training for this spring was the Horribly hilly hundreds out of Wisconsin.

Come to think of it Michigan does have mountains. Theirs Boyne Mountain Ski resort, and Schuss Mountain ski resort. Both of which are on this route. So I guess I did ride the Mountains of Michigan.
Compared to the 'mountains' of Ontonagon or Marquette county, these are pretty small. But, the problem with the Porcupine Mountains, there are no roads. Pretty tough on us roadies. Lucky you. I know the area. Great cycling for sure.

There used to be a road race up that way, around the Bellaire area. Tough course. Another one up north of Petoskey that I would just as soon forget! For those who remember when District RR's were a big deal (you needed to finish well to qualify for Nats), Michigan's used to be the other side of the Bay in Cedar. No mountains but some tough hills all around there.

I'll see if I can put together a profile of our old state RR course.

VeloNews reports that Lance is coming back.

BF has real, confirmed (?) Ryan photos.

GOP nominates a woman for VP.

Is the Apocalypse imminent?

Nah, BF still won't let a teenage kid make a post on their site. The world does not change..

Good luck Ryan.

I kinda believed he existed, but thought he was all mouth and no legs. Looks/sounds like he's gotten his focus and is doing some growing up. He seems like someone who might gain a lot with a few years in a uniform.

Oh...you mean like the 125 people murdered in Detroit Michigan since July as opposed to the 60 killed in the war in Iraq? Seems like his chances of survival have doubled. You're an idiot!

Could you abuse those statistics further? So far you achieved laughable but haven't yet reached utterly preposterous. Keep at it!

Well since 47 % of all statistic are made up I can use them as I chose but you don't say how I abused them. The demographics aren't the same but numbers are accurate and the point is made. I work with active Army soldiers every day and I see them getting out of the Army so they can make "big bucks" in Iraq; knowing they will be relatively safe to go home to their wife and kids.. The point was it is as dangerous in a big American city for young people as it is in the Iraq war. On point though RyanF is not so bad a rider and is growing into his own.

And sensible people can treat your bogus comparisons with the derision they deserve. You wouldn't be a recruiter, would you?

Do you understand irony?

Detroit population = 900K, murder rate = 14/100K
Iraq deployment = 150K, death rate = 40/100K

Derision they deserve********** Derision that an American deserves who has chosen to serve his country? No I'm not a recruiter. I'm just not a left wing I-hate-America-and-not proud left wing radical.

Not quite the same. Twist statics as you will. I said since last July. Not since the war began. But I do understand irony and this doesn't fit the definition. As I said the demographics don't fit but the point is made. Besides...RayanF is off to an adventure he will remember. Good luck Ryan!

Are you so wrapped up in your own BS that you can't parse a simple sentence in the English language? Or do you really think everyone else is so stupid that they won't notice you've swapped the antecedents for the pronoun "they"?

You really don't understand irony. I used your numbers (125 in Detroit and 60 in Iraq) to detemine those murder/death rates, not since the start of the war. So according to you, you are 3 times more likely to die in Iraq than Detroit. Who is the idiot?

Stay safe Ryan.

Lets get this thread back on track!

This was Ryanf's ride report copied from his blog. I thought everyone might want to read it.

I’m home

September 8, 2008 by ryanf
i had a fun 3 day weekend. I’m acully not tired at all. I recover fast. I’ll write more later.
ride report- yesterday i rode 121 miles. I left my sisters house at 9 am so i would not be late. It was chilly at first but not too bad. I had 11 miles to ride to the start of my ride with “fred”. On the way to bellaire(the start) i seen a couple signs that mean steep down hills and a mountain road so i was pretty excited and knew it was going to be hilly.
I rode 80 miles the day before but they were pretty flat miles and i took it easy and still averaged over 20 mph. I had a back pack of clothes and stuff on but i think it made me faster on the flat maybe.
I got to the meeting place and waited for a little while for “fred” to get there. I didn’t have to wait long. He got his bike out showed me the route on the map and gave me a few bars.
We left and start the first climb. He was riding really slow. I rode behide him for a while then he wanted me to lead. I took it easy , he told me at the start that if he was going too slow to ride ahead if i wanted too but i didn’t want to ride alone.
I was getting tired at half way already but fred never seemed to get tired and after he warmed up he road pretty fast. There were tons of hills. This is the toughest route i have ever ridden. We stoped at mile ~84 and ate. I usully eat a lot but i could not eat all the food. after eating i felt great the rest of the way.
