Tungsten Carbide pwnz all joo. Basically, it will never scratch and never dull. And the whole bit about losing your finger because it can't be cut off is total BS, as others have mentioned.
The only downside I see is that it can't be resized if you gain or lose a lot of weight. But considering a new ring only costs like $125, I don't consider it much of a downside at all.

See the photo at the bottom of page 1. So far so good ... no scratches and just as shiny as the day we put them on (3 weeks ago ). But you're right about the resizing ... I have skinny little fingers and so my ring is a bit big for me.

Actually, I read it would be easier to shatter it with pliers than it would be to cut it. Pretty brittle stuff, good thing during emergencies. Impervious to surface scratching too. I just can't deal with the gunmetal color though.

Regarding the sizing, I simply ordered the wrong size. Maybe I was retaining water or just having a "fat" day that day, but from day one my ring was too big for me. I just ordered a new one last week because my current one is constantly falling of any time my hand gets wet and I would absolutely lose it eventually. I guess the silver lining is that if I ever tire of this cycling thing that keeps me in such good shape, I'll have a larger ring ready for when I pack on the pounds.

Size is key. I have lost so much weight since the day that the ring flies off all the time.
Caught it from going into the urinal today. I would have left it.

I have a titanium wedding ring and absolutely love it. I have seen many mens rings deformed from things like cycling or working in the yard, you will not have that with Titanium.

SS and Ti are both about $100
and the white gold for a 4mm band is like $170
i need to pick in like 4 months or so and am leaning toward white gold esp since that is what she (fiance)is getting (and i want to match).
I was pleasantly surprised by the cost though. after that damn engagement ring I was worried these were gonna cost alot more.
And congrats to machka. Great location there, very pretty place.

Yeah I should just go to the mall and pick whatever they're selling cuz that's what couples are supposed to, right? It's not like the ring material selection the jewelers offer are affected by trends and availability.
In the thirties/forties, the jewelry industry successfully displaced platinum's prominence in wedding rings with palladium. At the time platinum was considered a strategic metal (WWII) and its value dropped. Back then palladium was more expensive than platinum. These days palladium is cheaper then 14k gold.
Why is it that I have to pick gold or platinum?
Platinum is softer than 18k gold. It is so soft in fact that if you run a serrated knife through it, the material won't flake off to form a groove; the material will move aside. In a sense that is good because the ring will never wear thin. $1200 per oz.
Gold may be more impervious to light surface scratching than platinum, but it can wear thin because it flakes on abrasion. And it is still a very soft material that easily deforms, even at 14k. $900 per oz for 24k.
Steel, titanium, ceramic ziconia, and tungsten, are all multitudes stronger than either traditional metal. Only a diamond can scratch tungsten, but it is a very dark metal. Ceramic is almost as tough as tungsten, but comes only in black, white, and pink. Ti seems too light for me; feels insubstantial. Surgical stainless steel (316L) looks like platinum, but won't deform, stain, and can easily be buffed.
I mean, Rolexes are made of this stainless and I bet they have those at Kay Jewelers!

Hmmm.... looks like stainless steel to me. Austenitic. Is that the glow of 2% Manganese and 2% Molybdenum at the top of the picture?

Yeah, it can't be meaningful if it's not expensive. Despite what the wearer likes or finds attractive. Are you sure you aren't the guy behind the counter trying to sell me the platinum ring, or are you just thoroughly brainwashed with the consumerism mentality that "more expensive" is unequivocally better for no reason other than that it costs more.

I'm wearing a Ti. ring right now. (not a wedding band)
I've had a variety of metals in rings and Ti. is absolutely my favorite.
My next one will probably be ceramic, but I'm quite happy with either plain Ti or Matte finished Ti.

Ironically, I have a Ti wedding band...but I got married long before I became a "serious" cyclist, so the implications were lost on me at the time. I just got it because it looked & felt cool...plus, I guess, because a Macintosh laptop was made of Ti. In hindsight I'm almost disappointed, because now that I know about cycling, it occured to me that my jewler simply bought some 6/4 tubestock & sliced off a 3/16" ring.
But if I had to do it all over again I'd still get Ti. I like the lightness.
(btw, I saw the subject line and thought this thread was about what songs to have the combo play!)
