Why I Telecommute (a pseudo ride report)
I got up today and knew I had to ride. I hadn't ridden in two days. Yesterday was a 14 hour workday and on Tuesday I hiked up and skied down St. Mary's Glacier after work (not fun). I work from home in Colorado and work East Coast hours, so I was going to burn out a little early for a good ride today.
Sure enough, one of my West Coast employees needs me on a call from 2-3 today, and I knew I needed to be pedaling up the mountains by 3:30 to get down in decent light. So, I got changed, loaded the bike on the car and drove down to Deer Creek Canyon. I did my call with my iPhone and had my 3G card for my Macbook. I could have been anywhere. The call went great, I closed the computer, pulled the bike off the car and I was pedaling up hill at 3:10.
I had a great 40 mile ride with just under a mile of vertical gain. It was 85 degrees when I left the car and 62 degrees at 8,500' as I started my 10 mile descent to the car. Very glad I brought my soft shell. I was back at the car with plenty of light, but the canyons do get dark about an hour earlier than the plains.
Any other telecommuters out there who use the flexibility to get out more?

Bummer. I hope you work nights and are not just having a long day. Although, I can relate to those too.

I do, and it's no problem as long as work doesn't suffer. I did a 50mi ride with a friend today in fact. The only hard times on my schedule are meetings, and most of those I can call into. I'm getting familiar with what service I can get where in Marin, which makes it easy to plan a meeting stop. I prepare by loading up the iPhone in advance with what I might need to have on hand (typically defect reports and tickets in my case).

Yeah, I'm a contractor (IT) and work from home. I rode twice today (only an hour each). I live in CO and my main job is on the west coast, so I got in a ride and was at my desk at 8:00 pacific time. got out after work too. This week I had a few meetings, but often it doesn't matter when I am working as long as I get the work done.
