Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

1992 Bottecchia Columbus steel with full campy athena gruppo. Its 12 years old now with small upgrades every 3 years. A setup like this was a good investment thats paid off handsomely.

I like older bikes, Ha! The girls I date are younger than the bikes I ride. 82 Peugeot made tough for downtown san francisco streets. 80 Schwinn fixie convo to be fashionable. 70 something bottecchia to give that cultured air to my persona. haha...

Cool! However. That bike was way to big for me. Alas, it has been replaced with a Bianchi San Remo tourer. The Raleigh went to a good home and is seeing use on a weekly basis by its new owner.

80's (not sure of exact year or anything) centurion. Most everything is oem (shimano, dia compe). I just replaced the bar tape and tires which were worn out. I also removed those ugly multi coloured stickers. Mostly use it for commuting around Philly.

I'm pushing a 1989 Centurion Expert Ironman. Actually, I am in the middle of restoring it with some upgraded components, new pedals, saddle, tires, rim tape, handle bar cork. It is the off-white color with airbrushed bluish/gray forks and stays.

I think i may just strip it down and upgrade with Ultegra, and maybe a carbon crank, new wheels, and Cane Creek headset and brakes for fun.

I ride a 1973 Cilo Touring bike that I bought used in 1977. It is all Campagnolo down to the seatpost and dropouts. The frame is chrome lugged and rides like a dream. I've replaced a couple of hubs, rear derailleur, wheel rims, bearings and whatnot but it is still close to original.

The guy I bought it from had ridden the bike across the US for the American Heart Association. I made many multiday tours on this bike and rode it extensively in the late 70's. Then kids came along and I didn't ride at all until 2001, when I pulled it out of mothballs and began riding seriously again. I've ridden over 14,000 miles on it since then, 3400 so far this year.

I love this bike.

84 Trek 740 - with some parts from my 78 Trek 520. Great geometry for loaded touring, a bit heavy for the Saturday club rides.

'74 Nishiki Olympic. I bought it brand new with money I saved up from my paper route. I plan to ride El Tour de Tuscon on it.

1981 custom built Columbus SL Davidson in charcoal grey imron paint. It looks like carbon fiber, but carbon fiber hadn't been invented yet, or not used in bikes anyway.

1982 "stock" Columbus SL special by Italo Zilioli, all Campy SR pantograph except for the brake levers, which are Modolo aero. Its the only Zilioli I know of in the US. The only upgrade are my Velomax Tempest wheels, which are shared with the Davidson. With the new wheels it weighs 18.5 pounds, maybe not light by today's standards, but superlight for when it was built.

1994? Trek 8000 MTB. Bought in January 1995, but it might be a 93.

Where to start...

My modern pride and joy is a Trek Y-Foil, vintage 1998, but assembled in 2002 from a NOS frame and new Campy Chorus group. A screaming demon on the downhills, and real eye candy in it's metallic gold color.

My wife and I cruise around on an early 90's Cannondale tandem.

And I recently acquired two examples of a bike I rode back in college: early 70's Falcon San Remo 76, with the butted 531 frame and Campy NR equipment. Bought one for myself, and one for my wife. Quick handling, smooth riding. Aside from being classy looking, these 70's vintage racers are actually pretty good deals.

My MTB is a 2000 Kona fire mountian, road bike is a late 80's schwinn, lugged columbus frame. I ride roads and rail-trails. MTB is also a tow vehicle for daughter on trail-a-bike.

1985 Raleigh Touring 18.

It had a vacation of about 10 years and then was loaned to somebody who took it on the whole RAGBRAI ride in 2001. I'm starting to think of getting a contemporary bike, but this is such a comfortable ride and it's made of decent quality parts.

Anybody else have one of these?

1981.5 Trek 950 Pro, All campy nuevo and super record. I would like to get rid of the sew-ups, must find some old 36 hole clincher rims to lace to the old campy hi-flanges.

1989 Trek 1100. It's more of a beater bike, I got a 2001 motobecane I won off EBay that's on it's way, but so far this bike has started getting my own personal touches.

53t shimano 105 chainring (oldschool 1980s 105, lucked out and the LBS had one for dirt cheap)
43t sugino chainring (dunno wht level, i bought cheap since I'll be wearing that one out the most)
32t biopace (the other two were bio as well, but i hate bio and swapped them out...left this one though since I never use the granny ring)

VP SPD pedals, Modified a NiteRider Trailrat 2.0 to fit right on the bars, working on putting an entire suntour Superbe drivetrain on it, once I get all the parts together. I plan on keeping this bike oldschool, just because ....now I just need to get Trek to find me some original teal decals so I can get this thing re-painted
