and considering Vireo's FC508 post went to 6+ pages, i'm gonna say that LD is a big deal, to some. |

I was just up near Chester today... Middletown, for a work-related conference. Looks like nice riding up that way as long as you stay off the main arteries. Downtown Middletown itself seemed nearly as densely populated as the freaking Bronx - it was a weird and sudden transition from beautiful wilderness to a run-down, congested urban environment. Traffic was bumper to bumper at 3pm (and this is on a weekday) around the mall area near Middletown, I can only imagine what the gridlock is like around Christmas.

200km. Oh man, that's classic. The only people who should be riding 200km are UCI guys in a pro tour stage who get paid to do it. Period. At least it only takes them about 5 hours. How long does it take you Freds? A day and a half?

LOL. Rutnick likes to show off his e-weenie, very typical of him.

I've been using a single speed mountain bike with no suspension and I am pretty well done after 20 miles. Self-imposed intervals.

That's because it was an actual thread on riding bikes. For some reason, they're really hard to find here.

10-12 hours. Depending on weather conditions ... like snow, cold, wind, rain, etc..
Switch to a more relaxed solo pace, add stops for food and just enjoy what's out there and you add about 2 hrs. Take a touring rig with more gear, toss in headwinds, cold, etc, stop to eat where you can sit and wait to be served, and it can take even longer. If you wind up where you started, there's no benefit to racing and missing everything out there. One of the benefits to cycling is you can see things you wouldn't notice in a car. Yesterday, I stopped for an hour along my route at a lab that raised butterflies. I got a personal tour of the facility where in one room I had all kinds of exotic butterflies and moths landing on me (including an Atlas moth which has a wingspan as large as a bird). I learned quite a bit about different kinds of insects as well the procedures for raising them and what kinds of permits you need to move them around and the facilities you're required to keep. |
Come out next year and ride these 20 miles and then you can tell whomever you want to HTFU.

Wait, this thread is about bragging about a double metric? Why is a double metric such a big deal?

It also depends on which bike you took, if you're riding solo, and if you're going for time. In a paceline in decent weather where it's not particularly hilly, doing it in 5 1/2 hrs would be easy enough.

Pcad's longest ride is 112 miles. that's about 18 less than this ride which was 130. He needs to HTFU. Maybe you need to keep up with the details. |

No, you need harder "i'm going to puke my guts out" miles. Quality road cycling, not quantity road cycling. IGH Shimano Alfine/Rohloff, no stupid derailleur to break. I find SS moronic, well, at least on my terrain, rolling terrain would suit SS well. Example. http://www.diesel.34sp.com/Inbred%2029er.JPG The subforum you are looking for is here. We'd smack you a few times and then take your bike for riding trails when it is that wet. Dorks like you are the reason we have to repair the trails. |

My Wed ride? 200K. Gramps....what did you do?
It is true....after a while....distance is just a number judged by only time that will be spent on the bike. My friend and I had talked about doing a 200k for about 3 weeks and finally set a date....great ride. Just me and him and 3 stops for water. Relatively flat ride with only 6500k of climbing. 60 miles of the ride was pancake flat.

5 1/2 hours would still be out of my reach, even in those conditions. My fastest century, in those conditions, was 6 hours ... a 200K is 40 kilometers more than a century ... so that's at least another 1 1/2 hours.
Plus, there's the whole aspect of how civilized you want your ride to be. I've never been willing to whizz in my shorts to save time, but I have been willing to spend a lot of time in considerable discomfort. I recently decided that I need to worry less about speed and more about just having a great ride. |

Yeah, but you ride a heavier setup that's not very aero. Without a tailwind, I couldn't touch those numbers myself unless I was on my racing bike on a pretty easy course spending much of the time being towed by others. Also, I miscalculated. In my case, even under good conditions 5 1/2 hrs is probably too optimistic, though sub 6 is well within reach.

I recently decided that I need to worry less about speed and more about just having a great ride. Now, I guessed that my fastest 200 would likely be 7.5 hours, under the same conditions. I was thinking about it on my ride today ... and I think I did do a 7.5 hour 200K as a part of my first 600K brevet in Manitoba. I slowed up a lot after that, but it was a beautiful day, in relatively flat conditions, and we spent the first 75 kms drafting a fast tandem couple. |
I did 129 miles with 15,000+ feet of climbing. Can I get a cookie?

Riding over 100 miles doesn't mean you know how to HTFU. It means you have nothing better to do.

Nothing better to do blotto? It would be one thing to criticize if my distance was UNDER 200K. |

That's like bragging on post count or how many miles you ride a year....apparently neither matters all that much. |
